A. J. YTELIN 1 Yenhold, Alberta, BLOOD -POISONING. By the term blood -poisoning is meant the presence in the' blood of the germs of putrefaction to suppuration, or of the poisonous products of these germs. 11 is necessary to define the expression al the beginning, for, strictly speaking, every form of poisoning, including al- e , blood -poisoning. . ,IuR o • • r is , C t x lis► . loud o n lt-u n is b (, t 'flierir pre Three distinct forms of o germs of blood -poisoning. e! In on h g legtrelaction are circulating in the blood and manufacturing their poison, upon which the syultptuuts of the disease de- pend; in the second form the blood t on- tained germs are those which cause pu s- f01aRUl. and they also manufacture a poison which produces the disease; in the third form the bacteria,is, either of putrefaction or of suppuration, are not in the blood but en the surface of the , o ; are due t 0 the d• and t t nl body, n the s'm absorption of the poison eluboruted by them. The toxin, as this bacteria -produced poison is called, is in This last instance imported, while in the first two cases mentioned it is, as it were, of domestic manufacture -therefore obtained more easily and in greater quantity. These three forms are culled in medi- cal itinguage, septeinia , pyemia and snp1'elled, respectively, meaning septic germs in the blood, pus in the blood, and the products of putrefaction in the blood. The pyemic form is characterized by Irregular chili, fever and sweating, and the formation of abcesses in various parts of the body. It is very commonly fatal. Septemia resembles pyelnia in its symptoms, except that the fever is more continuous, not Leing interrupted by.chills as it Is in pyemia, and there is no formation of abscesses. The severer forms of Septemia aro almost always fatal, but the disease occurs open in colt 'er type. in which the chief symp- toms are high fever, headache, and de- pression of the vital forces. Sapremia resembles septernia in its symptoms, as it naturally should. since both these forms of blood -poisoning are caused by lite same poison, in one case formed outside of the body and absorbed by the tissues, in the other produced by the bacteria in the blood and tissues. Sapremia may terminate fatally, but it yields more readily to treatment. This consists In management of the wound, Opening it up to the air, culling away the festering parts, cleaning the surface thoroughly, and treating it with anti- septics. - DRY TOAST HI:ALTIIFUL. A good many people would eat toast oftener than they now do if they were not under the Impression that toasted bread is not good for the general health. Froin a leading medical journal comes th ennouncene t that toasted bread is ver'wholesome even for invalids. One thing In its favor is the fact that it places a lighter lax on the digestive functions than ordinary bread, since during Its preparation some of the eta•eh grains of the flour are ruptured. while some are converted into dextrine, which is easily soluble. Further, the crispness of toast neees- aileles its being completely moistened in tho mouth before it cnn be swallowed. As a rule. therefore, toast is thoroughly submitted to the action of the prelimin- ary digestive process in the mouth. 11 is Important, however, that toast should be crisp all through, as other- wise the Internal portions tend to be- come plastic and soft, like new bread, and like 1t, difficult of digestion if not thoroughly masticated. ■ 1015 HALE -- Muskoka district, Stearewa, t rOu aures, kis el, ae; good suit, 56 cleared, balance bush' ball mile front *drool, church, P.O. The Number is Growing at an Alarming Rate. A most disquieting volume for tht British render is tho sixtieth report of the Commissioners in Lunacy. From this it would appear that lunacy is in- creasing in the British Isles in a most alarming fashion, while the cost of maintaining the pauper lunatics spears to be rapidly mounting out of all pro- portion to the numerical increase. As showing what a burden they are to the British taxpayers, one finds from fort, A fine orchestra is on every the report that 132,000 persons were steamer, and everything is dorso to I etained last year at n cost of 15 shil- lings a week each, every penny of which had to he found by the efficient mem- hers of the community. The best way to begin a trip to the Old World is to take the While Star Line steamers from New York or Bos- ton to the Mediterranean ports. For those who enjoy a sea voyage, this trip cannot be equalled in interest and va- riety and in the quality of the accom- modation afforded by the magnificent boats of this line. The inexpensiveness of the trip when the above points are considered is not the least interesting feature to be considered in planning a European trip. The sum of six dollars a day will pay for every item 6n a fif- teen day trip in the best first -cabin ac- commodations. The meals provided are the equal of those to be had in the finest hotels in the world, and the service in every particular is absolutely beyond criticism. There are a thousand and one little kindnesses for the passengers' corn - pers. An Important section of the report deals with the question how far insan- ity is due to heredity. The number of cases which can be definitely ascribed le this cause is given at about one- quarter of the total. One startling feature of the report- is that annually some 8,000 persons aro ills -charged from asylums as nominally recovered, such persons, as Is known from experience, being a source of dan- ger of contamination to the population. But over rind above this Ls the large number of patients sent into freedom every year "not recovered." Last year there were 1,872 of such and the report calculates that "rather more than ono -third of the discharged, including in this calculation those whc have nominally recovered, have to be sent back to the asylums." There is, necordingly, n conslant streamo t t lunatics flowing K out c r , f the various asylumsas well ns ala larger er flood That is always flowing inward. This, of course, helps the production of hereditary lunatics. One-sixth of the women more than 20 years old admit - led into asylums during the last four years were widows. Liss than one- tenth of the Wren admitted were widow- ers. , AN INGENIOUS TIluuK. cater to the best class of passenger trade. Passengers are afforded an opportun- ity of spending a day at the Azores, at Gibraltar, and at Palermo. and Naples, where they may disembark or continue on to Genoa. Even in the heated months this trip is most enjoyable. The weather is particularly pleasant and the sea always smooth In July and August, and no better way can be found of spending a month's vacation than just the trip over and back in one of these floating palaces. in the winter there is no way the equal of this for reaching the heart of Europe or getting to Egypt or the Far East.
