EXETER, JNT., CANADA, THURSDAY MORNING, AUGUST 9th 1906,
The By -Law Carried. Locals
The Majority Given Was 310. Misses Lillie Rowe and Stella South-
cott ore visiting in Clinton.
Nearly the Whole Available
Vote Was Polled.
The by-law to loan the Exeter Can-
ning and I'neeervine Competes
$10,00U for 15 years was endorsed by
the tuxtrlyees et tlx: polls last Sat-
urday by a vote of 3:17 for ler 27
against. There was an cxceptienally
I:Lrpe vote and not more than a doz-
en of the available votes failed to
e.'reisu their franchise. As soon as
t 1 .t trolls assn0 opened in the morn
ince til.o voting eta.rtcd and there
were very few moments when Sano
0110 leas not Working his or her mark
fon or against tate by-law.
The women voters were out in full
fence, and in sevorsl instances four
or five oanie together. Some of them
slated they ware not ashamed of
their vote and on being }ended a
ballot Weer made their cross folded
the paper and handed it to the riep-
uty returning officer without t oin;
through the formality of narking it
behind the screen. A few of the
wonli!n volol•ei were of an extreme
old ago but nevertheless Seemed pleas-
ed to be elite to octet their votes for
the by-law.
At every poll :several workers were
busy ail day, checking off voters as
they come in and then hustling out
for some one else. Tho opponets to
tho by-law had a very slim repres-
entation at the polls, and in some of
the subdivisions no person offered to
oppose it.
Several voters cense from a dis-
tnnoc, and most of the campers at
Grand Bend who own property here
oaino ill to Vote.
The passing of the by-law bids fair
to having aunother by-law present-
ed to the people for their sanction.
Thcae is a talk of a knitting factory,
which will employ 50 handl the year

Messrs. T. 11. Darling, 8.M. Sanders
and Davis Gardiner, of Kingston ad-
dressed the meeting.
Mr. Curling in •his address stated
that taome wore under the ilnpression
ho would vote against anything that
would increase hie taxes, but that
their impressions were decidedly
wrong. Ile 1 houxht a canning fac-
tory would be an excellent thing for
Exeter and would receive his hearty
support and urged other voters to
do likewise.
Mr. Sanders stated that lie visited
several places where new industries
were being established and spoke
particularly of Welland, which is
gettinz a steel concern and buildings
costing over half a million dollirs
ere being eroded. The town of
Welland 'sever 100 years old and has
been 13 ing dormant alt those years
and is just now awakening to the
I that it has Iran :asleep. Properly
that heictoforc could not be given
away for the payment of the taxes,
is not for elle, or is held at n good
figare. \Thy; Jieeause, manufac-
turers arc headed that way. Mr. San -
dere was at Aylmer and he saw the
working of the Carmine Factory
there and in conversation with a
farmer who was hauling some stuff
to the factory, the latter informed
hire it was the hest thing dist ever
struck Aylmer and as for himself,
there is nothisng like it.
