TIIE WRONG WORD.
Bessie came in from school and sat
down before her mother. There was a
solemn expression on her face. Iter
mother looked down at her with a
smile. waiting for her to speak.
"Is it right to tell things that you have
heard at school?" she asked, somewhat
timidly,
"Not unless it can do someone good,
and would not be telling another's se-
cret," said her mother, quietly.
"Oh, this will do good, and it is about
some one in our family, so it is our
secret."
"About Robbie, isn't it ?" asked her
mother, for mother's hearts tell'Ihem
more than their ears sometimes.
"Yes. The girls -the little girls down
In Bobbie's room -say that sometimes
he does not know anything!" declared
Bessie, whose eyes were wide wills her
news. The last word had come out
with strong emphasis.
"Why, i think he must have )earned
something," said her mother, smiling.
"They say the teacher has a dreadful
time with hire, and makes hint say the
things over after her, and sometimes lie
seems to know them, and the very next
day he doesn't."
"1 will see when he comes In what it
Is nil about," said mother.
Presently Bobbie carte in from school.
Arte had stayed again after the others,
and his eyes were red from crying.
"Coale here, Robbie," said his mother.
"I want to ask you about your school.
Cann you learn your lessons?"
"1 always know my lessons, but the
teacher says 1 don't."
"Give me your book," said his mo-
ther. "Read this for enc."
Bobbie read the little paragraph. Ile
made no mistake, and his mother asked
hien to spell the words. This he did
perfectly.
She looked inquiringly al Bessie, who
sat proudly hy. "It wasn't true," Bes-
sie whispered.
"\Vhy does your leacher say that you
do not know your lessons?" asked his
mother.
"Just because 1 don't know what a

never saw one."
Bobbie's Hp was quivering and hls
eyes were filling with tears. "Every
time she asks me to give her a nenser,
1 tell her 1 curet."
Mother took Bobbie up In her lap, and
when site saw That Bessie was going to
laugh. she sent her to look down the
street for the postmen, and Then she
said to Bobbie: "1 see that you do know
your lessons just as nice as can be, but

GETTING INVITATION.
A strange minister came to a little
country town to preach. After the ser-
vice was over, lie mingled with the con-
gregation, expecting that someone would
invite hint to dinner.
