of Exeter, while we intended drop -

more progressiveness here, so that
we will add a little more thin week.
The time for municipal elections is
drawing near, and several have si4-
nified their intention of entering the
con! est. The honor, if it may so be
called, is an empty one, those occu-
pying t he positions as reeve :ul.l
councillors. serving the people swilh-
out remuneration. The law pre-
vents any of then from entering
into a contract With the corpora-
tion, whereby they could eecuro per•
sotlal emoluments, and it so }teepees
that n councillor often loses a good
contract for that reason. The
Council l:aards of Exeter in the past
have been graced with men of cx•
ceptional abilities, and some of theta
bare filled out tthoir terms of of •
Tice without dein; very much to-
wards the interests of the town.
When a man allows his name to ,,o
before the public for a municipal
office he is invariably cautioned by
the electors to keep down the
of taxation. This promise is usual y

the betterment of the interests of

up. We do not know whether these
editors are willing or able to invest
