In the mercantile line Exeter has

At Thu present time Exeter cannot
pride itself on a very material ad-
vanoement over what it was two
decades and a half ago. Our popula-
tion then was almost what
it is now, but the fact
riivat bo considered that at
that time, we had but a short while
enjoyed railroad 'facilities. Scenes
of activity were rife then. , IThere
were Iwo 'grist mills, one owned oy
the tato James Pickard, the other 'oy
William Fenwick, who left Exeter
years ago. The Fenwick mill was
destroyed 'oy fire as also woe the
1'ickard Mill, but was afterwards re-
built and used as a saw mill. The
building ie now there intact, hut
idle, keeping company with the de-
lapidated dam and rank weeds that
grow from year to year in abun-
dance. There was also a tannery,
and thanka'to our pro.rressivt towns-
man, Mr. T. Ii. McCallum, it is still
runninz althouzh he does not rely ea
this vicinity for his entire supply of
hides. The sair well is also in opera-

easy to laiso and if we had a fac-

quite sure it world soon be on a
