Burials.
Among the simpler folks of Clenlivet,
Banffshire, Scotland, a curious custom
prevails. On the day of the burinl,
when the chairs upon which rested the
remains of the deceased have been re -
hewed of their ghastly burden they are
immediately flung over on their barks,
to renting thus until Ike fun, rul cortege
is well on its way to the churchyard.
Those of the household who do not ac-

Another custom, which is Indulged by

their natural cheery temperament. That

COBBLER'S SON AS MARQUIS.
Aceoniplished Don Juan Lived in Luxury
by Frauds on Women.
A cobbler's son named Dieudonnr.
Emote, who masqueraded as the Marquis
the St. Aubin and SL Andre Comte de
Courcellos, was sentenced the other day
in Paris to five years imprisonment after
an astonishing career of fraud.
Ercolo is an accomplished Don Juan,.
and by his great personal attractions he
rucceelted in turning the heads of a ninn-
ies of women and defrauding them of
$100,000. He lived in very elegant style
in a house near the Ecole Militaire, keep-
ing a motor -car, horses, carriages, and a
number of servants. His coat -of -arras
was inscribed with the motto: "War, vir-
lue, mirth and worth."
In 1902 he made the acquaintance of a
Mme. V. and her daughter in Itheinis.
Ile borrowed 510,000 from the mother
and $39,(1(111 from the daughter, and then
disappeared, leaving his own mother in
charge of the Acsissttmce I'ublique.
Ito then went to Belgium, where he
met a Mine. Dur'campf, with a fortune
of $20,000. Ile proposed marriage, and
was accepted, but just before the cere-
mony he told her his real name, adding
that Ire was the natural son of the Due
de Penthievre. Aline. Dureampf, who
was anxious to become a duchess, did
not mind, and the wedding took place.
A year later he left her with a baby and
without any stoney.
The "ntn►•quis" next made the acqunin-
lnnce of a Mlle. Arnlandine Van Gelder,
alt actress, and managed to borrow con-
siderable sums of money from her. Ile
also borrowed her jewels without her
permission.
For this he was brought before the
magistrate. In answer to questions, he
said: "1 am an attache of the French
Embassy in Madrid. You know my
mune. Arrest mo if you dare." The
magistrate did not dare, and the "mar-
quis" disappeared, and has not been
heard of since. Ile was sentenced the
other day by default.
The woman he married in Belgium
has begun an action for divorce.

More Casualties in a Year on Railroads
Here Than in Battle of Mukden.
In the battle of Mukden between the
Russian and Japanese forces, the Russian
losses were said to amount to about 90.-
(160 men. During the year ending Juno
30, 1904, the casualities Oil American
railroads arueuntsd to exactly 94,201. Of
these 10,016 were deattvs h•out injuries.
If you live in a vil:age of 150 inh,ebi-
tants, says the Outlook, you may to
reasonably sure that stone fellow towns-
tnan of guars will be injured by a ru►l•
road during the year.
If your town contains 17,000 people, it
is mathematically certain that twenty of
theta will meet with an injury before a
year has passed, or that enough other
injuries will bo infle:tett in other parts of
the country to make up the quota of your
community.
If the freight train that passed you the
other day had a crew of nine men. in
Wino years every one of Them will hnt'c

tune will have been gained at the cost
of exceptional misfortune to others.
