Interesting and sometimes exciting was the public meeting Monday even- ing when the nominees made their lit- tle speeches. Of parts of it the less said the better. There is no object in publishing broadcast the heated argu- ment anti sometimes unwise and un- called-for statements of some of the speakers. If we omit some of it it is because repetition does not right the wrong. Mr. Jos. Senior, clerk, occu- pied the chair. Reeve Bolder was first called on. H made a resume of the year's work, ex plained the financial statement, stated that the increased tax was unavoidable because of the school board asking for more money, the county rate being higher, the Town Hall dehentau e being paid off, etc. He also referred to tha spending of a sinking fund some years ago by ex -Reeves Bissett and Carling, which met with Cheated opposit' from those gentlemen wben they spoke. Mr. Bubier stated that the council bad secured one indust( y and expected to seem e others. 311.. 13awden thought the town had E)aid too Inucl► for the canning factory. xeter had paid higher than other towns. Had t he ceulncil Made the best bargain possible: He thought the council had been looking to the wel- fare of the canning factory not the town. ltat•sh words and many effete to bet loge and small S(IIIIS passed be- tween Mr. Baw•den and Mr. 1olier re- garding an alleged letter received from one Elliott in Godet•ich offering Mr. Gardiner $1500 to go there to wl mage a canning factory. Mr. Thos. Hart, noll thought it odd that three grits should be nominated for Reeve. He criticized Mr. Howden for his cl iticism of the canning factory and said the point now was to do the best we could under t he cii cuelstancees. The cry had been for industries and we should help it along, wake the town borne, and vote fur the teen who le :p the town. Ile had figures to show that running 30 weeks a year each Mer- chant in town would profit to the ex- tent of $7:111 in ten years. 11 is was an eloquent and laulgh•ntaking speech. Ile declined to stand for election. T. B. Carling complimented Mr. Bawde•n as tan [referrable and thrif- ty, self-made mate He denied 31r. B ,- bier's assertion about the sinking fund. The Carlings bad never been back- ward in pitying their assessment. 1Vished the canning factory well and said he had told .11r. Gardiner that if tine company needed his help in taking stock he would help. Ile said the fac- tory W118 alright and suggested the helping of Mr. Murray or Connot• Bros. in getting a good foundry. Ile was not in the field but would support Mr. Bowden. Mr. W. G. Bissett also referral to the sinking fund business and said Mr. Bolder was in the wrong. Ile thought too much had been paid for our street lighting. Ile claimed the canning company should begin to pay hack the load in two years. He was not in the field but would support Alr. Itawden. A. E. Fiske made n fine speech, giv- ing iving a good account of the C'ouncil's do- ings and the reason for the increased taxation. This year $2114 had to be r•ai'e(I that other years 110(1 not. The ro.ids into the town had been well fix- ed up. ile thought this the wrong time to discuss the canning factory. It had been iutpreseed n( them to try and do something. They had done so and made the hest bargain they could with the company. The people had decided the matter. He is a can- didate. W. J. Heitman thought the town wee going to boom. Ile regretted Councillors Creech and Treble were not standing. He was in the field. Alessi s. Cr reel) and Treble made shnrt speeches and declined to stand for re-election. Mr. 1.. Levr'tt was not going to throw stones at the council. Ile did'nt agree with all they had (10110 but thought they had dune their hest. Ile expected to be. in the field. S. M. Sanders thought the canning artery ss *5 in good hands and t he 1sticistn offered it was unneeessar)•. We wanted industries. Ile thought. the council shook' ha '.' he approval of the i'stepnyers. USBORNE The 11unicipal 110111inati0t1 on Mon day best waw largely attended thus 1111))resting the deep interest taken in matters pertaining to the welfare of the tew•uship. It was probably the most bane ttttt ious meeting of the kind ever held in the township, there being no fault-finding or mud -slinging and the vat boats matters were discussed intelligently and in a lusiness-Iike manner. It was shown that the pres- ent Reeve had perfortned the and s duties of the office most zealously and it seemed to be tate almost um feeling - feehug of all present that he be elect- ed by acclamation. However, Mr. It. Gardiner was uowivated to oppose hitt. but it would seem as though the old Reeve will be sustained and he among those who will grace the Coun ty (?uuncil Board for 1907. It was a source of couch regret to alldiet1Messrs.
