Enormous Strides Made in Late
Years.

Sim, Chief Registrar of British
hricmdly Societies, for tho year 11)01
was recently published us a Blue -
Book.
The enormous strides that the
movement has made of tato years is
shown by the fact that on December
31, 1903, there were 35,103 regis-
tered provident societies in the Unit-
ed Kingston), with a membership of
17,913,612, and funds amounting to
1;164,933,157.
This is an advance of 2,000,000
members. and £9,750,000 in funds
since 1898.
The sales of the ordinary co -opera -
live societies for 1904 amounted to
169,414,324. The profits were £6,
054,319, of which £64,797 was ap
plied to education.
Co-operative societies have incrcas
cd their membership by 250,000, and
their assets by £13,500,000 since
1'98.
Each member of a trade union iti
190:3 had an average gross income of
£1 11s., and the amount of funds
per member was £3 6s. lid. .
Tho trade unions show an increase
of :350,000 members since 1898, and
funds which have nearly doubled.
On December 31, 19(13, there were
40,715 certified and post office sav-
ings banks, with 29,061,152 deposi-
tors; and deposits amounting to
.C39,610,925. This is an increase of
nearly 2,000,000 depositors and of
C1,250,000 in deposits.

Richard Brinsley Sheridan always
