NOVEL, RARE AND ANTIQUE
ARTICLES ON EXHIBITION.
The Ladies of the Women's Institute'
of Exeter on Thursday and Friday of
last week treated all those who were
fortunate enough to attend the Flower;
Festival and Curio show in the Opera
House, to a novel, beautiful and inter-
esting entertainment.
The affair was a most bt illiant suc-
cess and it is doubtful whether the
ladies themselves when they first con-
ceived the idea expected that such a
magniflcent display of flowers and ar-
ticles of rarity and antiquity could be
got together. One would net imag-
ine that there were so many articles of
age and beauty in the community as
were herr exhibited to the eager, won-
dering gaze of the hundreds of people
who cause to enjoy the feast, but had
anticipated no such a display. Yet the
ladies inform us that many more arti-
cles of rarely could have been secured
had more ample arrangement been
made for their accommodation and
safe keeping.
The lower room of the Opera House
in which the thow was held was in
many ways an excellent place for the
purpose, it being easily accessible and
centrally located in the town. The
cozy corners, the pillars and walls tent
themselves readily to the touch of the
decorators, and every spot was used to
the very best advantage possible. The
decorations added greatly to the exhi-
bition. Flugs,tace curtains,evergr'eens,
palms, wax plants, strings of ted Iter -
ries and pot flowers, etc., were used in
happy profusion for purely decorative
purposes, and assisted very materially
in relieving any part of the room from
the appeal ante of barrenness, and, in-
deed, added greatly in enhancing the
beauty of the flowers and curios.
One corner of the room was given
over to the refreshment committee,
who dispensed ice dream to those de•
siring such, and this feature wits well
patronized. A piano had been placed
In another cornet' and during the af-
ternoon young Ladies enlivened the af-
fair by much choice music, while the
orchestra was present in the evenings
and added beauty to the already rich
entertainment.
The decorations, the arrangement of
the exhibits, and the almost endless
amount of work involved in preparing
the whole entertainment, reflect much
credit upon the ladies who were in
charge and they are deserving of the
thanks of the people of town and 0n11-
tryside. Especially is this so when one
considers that the object was not to
make mune) but to instil in the minds
and hearts of the people a love for the
beautiful and to encourage the growth
of plants of the vat Sous kinds, and the
preservation of all sorts of souvenirs
and relics. The small admission, 10
cents, is suflicient to prove that all
that was expected was t hat the receipts
might equal the expense, and such 111(1;
undoubtedly the case.
Prizes were awarded for the best
