Plugs, THURSDAY, JAN. 26, '05 NOTES AND COJMMK(VTS The writs for Carleton by-election were issued on Saturday, nominations to take place on Feb. 4; ,end piling. if any, on Feb. 11. It is expected that Alt. 13urdea will get the seat unoppos- ed. s • Mr. H. Manning, of Clinton, is in possession of .4 windier 01 most inter - .sting espies of the London, Eng., Time., amuug thein being the follow- ing dates: -January 213th, 174X3, con- taining an account of the execution est L XVI., and a copy Of his will: Jul • 3rt1, 1797, an acculult of execution of Richard Parket' for mutiny; Oct. lid, 1798, account of Nelson's victory at the Nile; April 10th, 1801, account of battle of Copenhagen: Nov, 7th, 1805, account of battle of Trafalgar; Jan. 10t1, 1806, account of funeral of Lord Nelson, with a picture of coffin. in which ho was buried; June 22nd• 1815. account of the Bottle of Water- loo; Aug. 21st, 1821, atecount• of funer- al of Queen Caroline. Ile has also a Bible, printed in 1015, known as the Breeches Bible, bound in leather. • s We have been acting on the supposi- tion that every addition to our popula- clon, whatever its source and quality, [oust be a matter for rejoicing and pride, forgetting that after all the seats .at the banquet of life are numbered, and that a large immigration of infant Canadians is always going on. It may be as well to leave some room for our •own expansion. At all events we might pay rather More attention to the qual- ity of the immigration. Skye Crofters, who have probably never handled a plow, and certainly never seen a nua- •;:hine, half -savage Calabrians, and fren- zied Duukhobors, nlayaadd to our num- bers without adding much es en to our material prosperity, still nil •e, some of there, without improving our charac- er as it nation. Now we are receiving - a vast influx of Russian and Polish Jews, than whore it would be impossi- ble to name a less profitable or delecta- ble addition to the population of any reotantry.-Goldwin Smith. • • FEWER EXIIIIBITIONS DESIRED. The leading Agricultural societies of the Province are evincing consider- -able interest in the suggestions that -the slumber of exhibitions held annual- ly in Ontario should be Materially re- duced and that Agricultural Societies should receive their grants in propor- tion to the amounts( they expend for agricultural purposes. Such a change would do away with all distinction be- tween the township and district socie- ties. The Ontario Fruit Growers' As- sociation has passed a resolution ap- proving of these suggestions and ex- pressing the belief that such a change would result in larger sutras of money being expended for Agricultural par- pjloses. Tho Executive of the Dntnin- ton Shorthorn Breeders Association, at its annual sleeting in Toronto, on .January 16th, also passed a► resolution -approving of these suggestions and stating its opinion that fewer exhibi- tiens would result in larger attendan- •' es, better prizes and better exhibits. as well as a reduction in the undesir- -.able features now so prevalent at many -xtxltibilious. • w LOCAL OPTION RESULTS The Guardian stays: -Tho following stable indicates, so far ars we have been -able to secure the figures, the results in Lova!
