"Methnslnh loses his famous re-
cord, for his 969 reputed years are
whittled down 78 3-4." Thus says the
Jewish world in a discussion of Jew-
ish characteristics.
'There has always existed a certain
amount of doubt even among believ-
ers in the literal truth of the Bible
concerning the great age to which the
Jewish patriarchs are recorded as
having lived. Some of the theories'
evolved to reduce the Iliblicnl records
of this kind to something near the al-
lotted span of man are dealt with in
the article.
It is surmised, the Jewish World
says. that in the earliest titnes the
month, the period of a moon cycle,
called a year. Thus Adam's 930
years of life, calculating a year at
291-2 days, the length of a lunar
month, works out to 751-4 years.
After the month year there came a
(dive -month year, the limit of five br-
ing derived from the fingers on one
hand, it being remembered that pri-
mitive people always used the fingers
for counting purposes. Then cnmr
the twelve-month year.
Excuse for this rearrangement is
found in 'the Psalmist's limit of life
of three ;score and ten years, and it
is maintained that between the times
of North and David no such extraordi-
nary change could have taken place
as to a•educe the ' life of man by
eleven -twelfths. On the five-month
year basis Abraham's 175 years work
out at 72, and Isaac's 180 at 71.
Perhaps, too, there interven• d
six-month year, discovered by Jacob
while watching Laban's flocks. Thus
Jnbob's 147 years work out at about
73. The twelve-month year bean
with the E3yptinns, who vans that a
complete period was made tip of the
two "years," in one of which the days
were longer than the nights, and in
the other the nights longer than
the dnys.
The Christian and Jewish years,
concludes the Jewish World. will not
forever be separated, "for," it says.
"in due course posh linshona will fall
at Christmas time, nal then catch up
the Christian year. This, however.
will not happen for 30.00(1 years, and
no doubt that is the reason why no-
body worries about it."
