A parasitic fungus of the Canada thistle is the latest discovery which may prove of .great value to agricul- ture. The find is attributed to Prof. If. Barney Barnato and the Secret of the Blue Rock. it is now generally believes that diamonds are formed in the earth by extreme heat and pressure. Barney Barnett), the South African diamond magnate, was one of the first men to fathom the secret ot the source of the Kimberley diamonds and to make a fortune from his knowledge. Tho pioneers worked in the yellow earth which lay on the surface and found diamonds there in abundance. How they cath© there the men could not imagine. When they had got through thio layer of yellow earth and touched the blue rock underlying it their hearts sank. They thought they had come to the end of their riches. Bar- nato, however, did not believe that the gems had been deposited from above. Ho believed that what they were working in were really the craters of extinct volcanoes, that the diamonds had been forced up from below and that whence these had come more and greater were to follow. So he bought every claim he cool•!. and time vindicated his judgment. He did not make his guess public property. The ordinary man when he found his layer of yellow ground run low made haste to sell out to the uninitiated. One man who had reach- ed this stage obliged a friend by al• lowing hire to dump upon his claim the yellow earth which had been worked and sorted. Then he found a newcomer who was looking for a claim rich in yellow deposit. Tho novice paid $2,000 for the site and thought, that he had virgin yellow upon which to work. As a [net, he had to go down into the blue before ho handled a diamond. But the biter was bitten. The claim which was sold for $2,000 soon began to pay out of the blue rock and then could not have been rebought for $200,000. Barnato would have given $40,000 for it and taken the risk, but ho did not hear anything of the trans- action until the tenderfoot had bought and the man who thought himself clever had departed. WORK FOR WOMEN. How They Can Help to Make Towns Wholesome Places to Live In. Much its the lire of town improve- ment work can bo accomplished by women. In The Delineator a writer tells some of the things a woman can do -namely: Abolish unnecessary noise. Establish traveling libraries and so bring reading matter within the reach of all. Help to save the forests from de- molition. Clean up her own back yard and make it such a thing of beauty that it will bo an inspiration to her neigh- bors. See that the health of her fellow citizens is cared for by securing the appointment of a public nurse whose duty is the care and instruction of the poor. Secure lighted streets at night and thereby prevent crimes. Insist upon paved sidewalks. Demand cleats streets and get, then.. Get rid of tramps by having an ever ready town wood pile -no work, no pay. Help to prevent the injustice 11 child labor. 1)o away with immoral theatres, moving picture shows and postal cards. Beautify her street with wind. w boxes. Prevent telephone and telegraph companies from hacking off and muti- lating the branches of trees. 1'revent much loss of life by insist ing that all wires be underground. Arouse public interest in the public welfare. Keep her garbage box dean ana covered and insist upon her fellow citizens doing the sumo. She can do because she has done every ono of these things.
