By -Law Carried
The 13y -law to raise $22,000 fur the
installing of a better eystcm of fire
protection was last Friday carried by
a majority of 114. the vote being 185
for to 71 against. In every ward a
majority was given, and in the third
ward only six votes were registered
against it. The majority given was
beyondthe
expectation of the most
sanguine. it being thought by many
that the measure would carry by a
slight majority, while others predict-
ed a defeat.
The expenditure is expected to
cover the cost of the old mill dam
properly, the reconstruction of the
dant. the laying of the water mains
and the erection of a water tower
or stand pipe. etc.
The vote 4n the several sub -divi-
sions was as follows:

The entire plant of the Tudhope
Carriage Company. Orillia, as well as
about a dozen other buildings, was
destroyed by fire which started about
2.15 Saturday afternoon in the paint
shop of the carriage works. A man
who happened to be in that part of
the building, had barely time to
escape. The loss is estimated by Mr.
.1..11. Tudhope, head of the firm, at
half it million dollars, while the in-
surance is said to be between $225,000
and $250,000 or about half the amount
of the loss.

died last Thursday at her home on
