A mectine of the delegates cow. (rased of Messrs. Grahatn. Rice and Ityde, representing *he Ht. Marys, and Western Ontario Railway Company and the council and a number of business men of Exeter, was held in the Town flail on Friday afternoon to discuss the matter of the proposed extension of that line uassia; through Exeter. The dele- eation slated at the outset that they %•anted assistance of a financial nature towards purchasing a right of way throu;h the corporation. And if such assistance is forth cotn- ina the building of the extension tavill commence inside of a year, and the station placed some place between the Mansion house corner and a short distance above the Town !fall, and about a block from Main street, so tilut it will be locatted as to be • • easily accessible to the business por- •• tion of the town. The road from tit. Marys was opened up last July and the delegation stated is getting its share of the 'business. The .com- pany desires to extend westward to reach a lake port possibly Sarnia or Goderich. They hive secured u government subsidy towards the building of the 'line end have the backlit; of the C. 1'. It. up to n certain cost per mile and wish to have the balence :guaranteed by the municipality along the line. The C. P. It. -have promised to guarantee the interest on the bonds, if the in- terest is not too high. Iteevc %fcCal- lum statee he heard the road had gotten a grant from the government and did not think they were intend- ing to ask anything from the town and threw the meeting open for dies • - mission. • Several present agave their views Z♦ on the matter, everyone advocating • for better railway facilities. The platter of the amount of money given no matter how much or little has to be submitted to the ratepayers and an early action was advised. Tho • delegation said Exeter has better Ithings to offer in the way. of Jeusi-t • Hess than some of the other routes •{ and had the C. 1'. The amount they ask- •• cd was placel at $10,000. 2: As the mectine resolved itself into talk, each speaker. dwelling along Ithe same lines a ,notion was put and carried that the Reeve, Council and Messrs. The mem- bers belts.; .all present. Minutes of the meeting held Jany. 15th, were bated, althou;h it took soma time to, read aid approved. A circular let - find out just where some of the1 ter from committee regards the Bel - speakers were et. The questions proposed were: Shall we repair the present system: in- stall a new system for fire protec- tion only : or. put in a complete sys- tem fur fire and domestic purposes with a sewerage system. The stand pipe proposition for'fire protection only was received nvith the most 'favor. peeve .McCallutn, while in Goderich, investigated the system there and also the one at Clinton and found that a plant for domestic and fire purposes %•outs be too expensive for us to uudertaket the cost bring estimated at from 50 to 75 .thousand dollars. The revenue derived from such n system here would be insufficient to warrant the expenditure, which would be hard to estimate owing to the corporation being spread out and most people of the town have wood wells, and could not be compelled 'to take the water. The cost of putting in a plant for fire protection was estimated all the way from fifteen to , twenty-five thousand dollars. The matter of getting the water from the springs a mile and quar- ter east of the town was also advo- cated by some, but that proposition did not meet with much favor. Others advocated purchasing the property at the old dans, buyin; out the electric light plant, constructing a dam and installin; the waterworks system for fire protection only. us- ing the waster as power and getting. revenue in return from the electric lights, etc..•etc., end making en i teal place for recreation. It is most ,certain that the present system is out of date and out of reason. The old tanks are in a bad state of repair, except the three .re- cently built. unci the engine can pump out tiny of the old ones in twenty minutes. About seventeen years a;o the !waterworks question was agitated, when the level of the sprints east of the town were taken and they were found to be on a level with the top of the Central hotel. That. proposition then fell through and a few ye'ars later the question of erecting a stand pipe and laying of water main'. and getting' the water from the river. was brou:;Lt up and the sum of $14,000 was (:aced at the probable cost. The question of insurance was brought up and it seas asserted 1hnt if Exeter would 1111 in n. wood. eye - tem for fire protection n savinz of 20 to 30 per cent would be saved on insurance.. A motion was finally passed That the council take action with re;nrd to fire protection and bring an ex- pert here do discuss the matter.
