T I H E \ I U SK R.AT CLOVES.
The summer when Ilugh Greenwood
was eight years old it was decided that
ho aught n•,t to go to school for a while,
and steel be out in the air of the fields
reel tools nearly all of every day.
'floc was why Ilughie was left on his
er:iu!Lathcrs Linn when the. rest of
the futility went back to the city in the
fall.
Of course, in a way, Ilughte was glad.
Ili, missed father and mother and his
s:suers; but being on the farm meant
all kinds of outdoor fun which he
could not have in the city.
What, he wanted most, of alt was to
do some trapping. This was because
of the gloves, of course. Uncle Norman
had given thein to him when the mor!-
irugs began to get real sharp and snap-
py with cold. They were very warm
gloves, made of muskrat fur, and Uncle
Norman had .aid that Oliver Bunistead
had caught the ntuserats himself, in
1Iughie's grandfather's swamp.
Were there any more there? Oh, yes,
probably hundreds of them; and some-
times there were mink, and now and
then, Lul not often, an otter.
"\Vhy, just think of it, Uncle Nor-
man!" said Ilughle. "If I had souse
traps 1 could go down to tate swamp
and catch muskrats endugh for a fur
coat for mamma and a nice buffulo-
rcbe for papal"
"\Nelle' said Uncle Norman, "you
neight get enough for the fur coat, but
I don't, know about the buffalo -robe. It
takes an awful lot of muskrat skins to
make a buffalo -robe." And then be
laughed. But he also said (here were
plenty of traps in the shed, and he got
some of them down and cleanee them,
and showed Bugle() how to set and
place therm.
1t was a great day for Hugh when he
started out the first time to visit his
hne of traits. The sun was bright and
the crust of the snow frozen hard, so
that walking was easy; but it was very
cold. t tell you, those fur gloves felt
good then, and so did the woolen inuf-
fler which grurdmother had tied about
li1_'ntR,
The first trap, to Ihighie's disappoint-
ment, held no muskrat, and had not
even been sprung, and it was the same
:vas, with the second one. The next
vv us guile a long way off, and sudden-
!; , Lrfonc Ilughie reached it, a big rub -
bit jumped out of some bushes and
Bushed away into a holo at the roots
c; a big tree.
The traps were forgotten then, and
1lugh'o rushed to the Tree, and kneeling
down, looked into the hole. The rab-
bit was nowhere in sight, and so
Ilughie pushed his hand In, and then
his whole arum, and felt round.
dill he could not feel any rabbit,
tut his fingers did find a little place,
way in, through which he could just
push his hand. Perhaps the rabbit had
squeezed through. Ile pushed his hand
in and felt. No, (here was no rabbit.
And then, when he tried to pull his
Ilene out, he found he could not, be-
r;use his fur glove caught In some -
Ming sharp and rough. Ilam felt like
--ate 0. Every time he pulled, the glove
caught and held fast. Perhaps if he
riu1MJ hard it might give way and come
aft; but he knew that if it did it would
(Imp away Clown ince the hole, and ho
would never Fir. it again.
If he could only get his knife out and
cut the hole bigger, But no. his knife
was In his right-hand pocket, anJ it
was his right hand that was caught.
Ile could stove it back and forth a 'lit-
tle way and in and out a Mlle way, but
he could not get it free.
Ilughie begin 4o feel very cold. When
he had been running or walking fast
he had felt warm enough, but lying

The ways of the crank with an in-
vention aro unaccountable. Here is n
recent actual example: A brisk, eager
individual culled on a capitalist for the
purpose of interesting Lift in u device
for discouraging burglars.
"I want to get the idea patented," he
said, "and 1 haven't any money. I'm
willing to go halves with any elan lhat
will give me the financial backing.
"My scheme is this. You first make
ycur doors and windows secure, so that
they can't be opened at all from tIn
cutside -there aro plenty of devices for
(loing that now -a -days. Make all of
them tight and fast, except one. LeI ve
Iltat one so that it will open easily.
Then run a wire from that window to
the head of your bed, where you have
on alarm -bell. The burglar comes
along, tries the doors and windows,
and when he comes to that one he
seises it. The alarm goes off and the
burglar hears It and flees, or it wakes
sou up ani you are ready for hint.
In either case it accomplishes your pur-
pose.'
"But," said the cnpilalist. "if you can
make all the (Ioors and windows fast
except one, why not make that ono se-
cure, too, and dans keep the burglar
out entirely?"
"1 never thought of final!" replied the
inventor, rubbing his jaw.

I'ropt llor Blades on a Large Wheel al
the Middle o1 the Balloon.
Tho new.et dirigiblo balloon con-
structed in Paris is regarded as creating
aerial Ino -
ho mutter o[ a 1
it revolution in t
tive power. It is the joint product of
M. Kluytraans, a Dutch engineer, mud
Baron Edmond de Morcay of !'ares. Its
(special feature is that the entire driving
apparatus is )(teak(' in the body of the
balloon at its centre.
All the dirigibles previously made had
Pie propeller located under the hu•y'(uit
body. This had the effect of disturbing
couilibriuur; whether Tho fan was ahead
or astern, it tended to-forco the balloon
into a vertical position. When the pro-
peller was attached to the car, as in Tho
case of the•I'atrie and the Ville cue Paris,
there was an enormous loss of effect
owing to the drag of the balloon proper.
This had to bo offset by great power in
the propeller or else by enormous speed
of revolution. The propeller of the Ville
de Paris has blades more than ten yards
long, which revolve at the rate of 1.40
tarns •a minute; the Patrie's propellor
blades were only three 1111(1 one-half
yards in length, but they made 1,200
revolutions a minute. Path of these en -
pies added enor•rnot.sly to the weight
to bo sustained in the air.
The Kluytinans-Morcay flying mnchinc
is built on the principle laid down by
Col. Relined that the .notive tower, sta-
bility appliances and helm should all be
ns near as possible not only to tate cen-
tre of gravity but to the marts of the ban
ken. The apparatus consists of two
separate cylinders of silk stretched over
a steel framework and 11.11 together rat
intervals of ntx)ut eight inches by a cen-
tre' core and also by strong bar's of steel
tent into the shape of the capital letter
and extending outward about twenty,
inches from the body.
In tate interval between the two cylin-
ders there is n wheel of the same dia-
meter as the body revolving on the cen-
tral cora and driven from n suspended
motor. The propeller blades are attach -
sl to the lire of the wheel and revolve
freely within the U shaped braces. The
entire balloon, as constructed for ex-
perimental Purposes, weighs abut 275
px.unds, not counting the pilot. On a
trial it developed a speed exceeding 36
miles an hor' with the fans revolving 70
turns a minute.
This trial machine only hal n eopa-
ciiy of nbout 159 cubic yards. but one is
already begun of 1,500. It will be driven
n 30 home -power motor, weighing
only S) pounds, and it is expected that
it will carry two persons 30 miles an
Lour in a wind not exceeding n speed
of seven to eight yards n second. The
cost of it 13 estimated at $8,000 to $10,-
000. The war sire will be much smaller
than the Pattie, not exceeding 1.1400
cubic fret to the Patries 3.300. it will
take only half the number of army \\o-
pens to transport its.sections in cam-
paigning, and it will need only six hours
lo inflate it to twelve needed for the
Petrie. it will be able to retrain thirty-
eie u -s in Uie air.
A few years ago some knowing prt-

ORIGINS OF TYPHOID.
Doctor Soat)n, the medical health of-

a special report en the prevalence o'
typhoid in that district of England. Ili_(
ceunclusons are interesting. Ile says
that it is doubtful whether even 10 per
cunt. of the cases can be attributed to
the drinking of polluted or infected
water. Ile bee( ves that polluted and
infected foals are a i nu'_h more fre-
quent source of typhoid illness Ilion is
generally supposed. Ile refers to eases
which it is impossible to connect with
preceding cases, and suggests the pos-
sibility of origin from other bacilli than
those which are regarded ns the invari-
able specific causes of typhoid. Recent
investigations in Germany show that
paeients may harbor typhoid -bacilli
months after recovery from illness, and
that persons In good health may bo
the hosts of the organism.
