It is not every winter that Exeter peo-
ple find so much snow on the ,`Main-st.
Mat it becomes necessary that it be
removed. Yet merchants had occasion
on Saturday last to employ teams and,
men for several hours to remove the
beautiful to a less inconvenient place.
The heavy storms of Thursday night

Mr. Thos. White has secured the con-
tract for carrying lits Majesty's mail
from Exeter to Kirkton and return for
$410 per year. The long route from Ex-
eter to St. Marys has been divided into
two routes, K:rkban being the dividing
point. 1t is understood that Pural free
Delivery will be, established along the
route should thc !armors desire it.

DEATH OF GEO. K. 11E111).—The
death took place at 3trathruy on Fri-
day last of George K. Herd. a prominent
lumber merchant. after a week's illness
Mr heard was a sort of Inc late Mrs.
19aac Bawden. and lived here for sev-
eral yea's, being to tite cn,nloy .,f the
late James Pickard. Four sisters.Mrs.
Fife and Mrs. Fisher of Toronto, Mrs.
Sheth of Barrie, and Mrs. Herrington
of Saskatoon, besides the widow and a
young family, survive. Deceased was 50
years of age and a member of the In-
dependent Order of Foresters. The
funeral was hold at Strathroy.

THE CAIINIVAL.—The first Carnival
of the season was held in the rink here
on Monday night last. The attendance
was large and while tnc costumes were
limited the affair was a success finan-

iation. That Mr. Scott will grace the
resition for which he has been chosen
goes without saying. lie enjoys a
great personal popularity, is thorough-
ly practical in all his methods, and to

ical experience. The sessions were fav-
ored by the presence of a number of
prominent speakers and many a valu-
able suggestio.t was carried away from

prove valuable to dairymen.
AGRICULTURAL MEETING.—The an-
nual meeting of the Exeter Agricultural
Society was held In t'tc Town; (fall on
Mondat• afternoon last. Mr. John W.
Taylor was a('signed to the chair and
the financial report of the society was

to be In a good healthy condition. The

and has been a resident of the West

Mr G. A. K. McLeod was taken quite

forth, and was brought to his home
here on Monday. Ile is now progressing

The machinery for the Jackson Bros.
Clothing Manufacturing bustness has ar-
rived here and the building 19 now !acing
altered, preparatory to installing the
machinery.
Three Indians broke into a store at
CkrIlale, near Allem Crag, o'le night
last week, and doffing their eli clothes
frim overcoats to socks, calmly helped
themselves to new wcaring apparel,
evert down to cuff buttons, and then
departed. The merchant swore out a
warrant for their arrest at Ailsa Craig
and t: ereupon three stalwarts of that
village, so we understand. got on their
track and traced there to this vicinity,
and after having their warrant fixed up
by Magistrate Kay, found the three
Indians in a hut in Hay Swamp, but
apparently lacking the necessary valor
to storm the stronghold, they retraced
their way to Exeter to secure the help
of Chief G111, who never was known to
"tura his back upon Doti of devil yet"
—or !Alai: tither for that platter. On
returning to the nut they found the
red men had decamped aid naught was
left but the antouidering ashes of their
ramp fire. We uhdcretand that ein'-
a lone )furor has been arrested and
was confined in the goal for a few
hours on suspicion. It was, however,
learned that he was not one of the in-
vincible three and he was allowed to
depart.
HOCKEY MATCH.—London Medical
College Hockey Team. the fastest team
of hockey players in the City League of
London, will be here on Friday night
to play hockey with the Exeter leant.
The London team will come by special
nein and will be accompanied by a big
bunch of rooters. Exeter will have the
fastest team that we have been able to
put on the Ice in many yeara and a great
Zaino is sure to be the result. Conte out
and boost the .own boys. Nothing will
help sport ro much as a strong support
of the townspeople. Skating after the

DEATH OF MRS. FISHER.—Sad in-
deed was thc news to many or, Wednes-
day morning last. Jan. 19th, when it
was learned that Mary Weetcott, relict
of the late Pratt Fisher. had passed
away. comparatively few knowing that
she was seriously 111. Mrs. Fisher had
b,e:t ailing for about four months from
as attack of jaundice. but her case was
not considered at all alarming until
about three weeks ago, when her physic..-
rans advised an operation. Dr. Moore
of London was called a we_k ago and
assirted by Drs Ilyndman and McGill-
icuddy the operation was performed. it
proved a success but owing to the nat
ure of the disease she never rallied suf-
,!iciently to lead her friends to hold out
any hope of her recovery. Mrs. Fist:• r
was born In the township of Uebor:.e
and for the greater portion of her life
she lived in that township. Mout 2',
years ago she with hrr husband and

and she was attended by a little flower

satin, with veil and orange blossoms,
and earned a bouquet of Lily -of -the -
Valley and Roses. Mr. and airs. Taman
took the evening train for Detroit and
Toronto, the bride wearing a tailored
suit of navy cloth, with hank furs and
mink hat. The young couple. have the
congratulations and best wishes of their
