To the advocate,
"Exeter" the brakeman cried as the
trate pulled up at the station, and we
all jumped off. ' My, What a change.
Sint: a beautiful little etatlon." "Yes.
Tienge getting city -like." "Sure." Of
course, 1 took the ' old reliable"; 1t
sweeeed more like old times. "All a-
board" called the driver and away we
nmt.
"Say, Harry. how old is that team;
nineteen years?" "Oh, Andy. I'll go you
the drinks If those horses ain't nearer
thirty. Leave It to uur friend here, tho
glue man, who has been eyeing (trend
ever since he got in. What say you,
Josh?" 'Well, 1 say twenty - seven
years, eight months, and nineteen days
and likely born about 2.13 a.m. on a
Sunday morning." 'Well, I'll treat twice
if the driver confirms that. Slick t own
isn't it? Nice homes. Fine sidewalks.
see the lawns. Beautiful. Got water-
works here now, Harry_?" 'No, but
they will have when Local Optlion comes
in and there will be plenty, to water the
streets as well as sprinkle the lawns.
"Sidewalks out next the road improve
: to town wonderfully " "Sure, Andy.'
"Reduces the coat of keeping up streets
as well. No cutting into the boulevards,
earth to 1* called away, or holes left to
to: m mud-puadle•, but a fine gutter
:next the walk for tae water to run in
d tr.: water, after rain, cleans the
e reels " "That'. so. People must be
:azy, to put down sidewalks, unless
.ext the roads. See Toronto and other
::lee adopting tits plan." "Yore, and
every up-to-date t own as well." "Thug"
goes the wheels; the driver carie out
"Central" and we get out. "Hello Andy,
waere have you been all these years?'
"Out West:' "Why, you will be as big
i talking feature as the new preacher
in town." And who is he, pray? Rev.
Itobee, did you say? Oh po, Rev.
Hobbs." "Where did he come from?'
"Toronto, 1 believe." "911 ho, Guess I
have heard of him." "\Nell, he's a talk -
pr. They say he is down on dancing,
but he seems to get around the plat-
form lively enough to make a good
dancer himself. Got them all talking
anyway, and they say he Is going to f111
that big church full. Coming from all
the churches to hear him. Good preach-
er and a herd hitter. If there are any
sleepers over there, he will wake them
up and wake up the other cnurclles, too.'
' You ought to get hint to preach a ser-
mon on Sidewalks. He'd startle some
of them with some mighty fine points
along the ilne of sidewalks, etc. But
slay, is that Chief Gill. I haven't seen
him for so long. I must ''catch hint."
Good-hye. Se' you again."

FARMER
aFARMER CHARGED WITH ARSON.
Edward N. Mara, a farmer who resid
e e in McGillivray Township, one and a
halt miles north of Clandeboye, was ar-
rented July 22nd on the charge; of burn -
Ing a barn belonging to Geo. Carter of
the name place. The information was
laid before Squire Chittick by Wiltlam
L. Patton, who rents the farm, on which
the barn teat was burned was situated.
The burning took place on June 2:. and
ou.lty constables have been working on
• case since. Mara is a young mar -
cd man and looks very little like a
: :sinal. When taken to London he was
.tat in dress and appearance, and did
rot seem at all nervous. The Squire re-
manded him for ma week.
The burned barn was on tee farm ad-
joining Mar.a's, and was burned about
:'a'dnight. A t.eavy rain had fallen and
• officcra say there were tracks lead -
et to and front the barn fro:u Ataea's
t:omc. acroes a field, and that there
were boot marks, In whice were heavy
nalln, with some of the nails missing,
and tart boots that would make such
track.; were found on Mars's place.
Later -The evidence was taken on the
case on Monday last and the prisoner
was sent up for trial at the December
-reetone, but was let out on ball of
e4,emo. $2000 being his own surety and
two other suretict of $1000 each.

T':e prosperity of a town is not

but by the uniformity with which they
pull together when any important un-

do more for the building up and iniprov-
