Barbarous People Who Own Alle-

When the British expedition now
operating in Northern Nigeria has

unconquered tribes of savages will
bavo been brought under the do-

are the Munshis, the Abadjas, and
the Okpotos.
So tho civilization of mankind

Succeisive Kings of Scotland did
much to improve its native breed of

is not to be forgotten that the first
Scottish King of England, Jaynes
i., did more to improve the race-
horses in Great Britain than was
cter done before him or has ever
Leen done by any individual since.

MALAYAN BULLFIGHT.
Beaten Beast Is Butchered to help
Along an Oriental Holiday.
Last Sunday 1 witnessed a buffalo
fight for the first time in my life.
It was at Batu Baker, in Kedah,
where such exhibitions are a mat-
ter of weekly occurrence. The ani-
mals fought in an enclosure on
ever yside by raised platforms for
those of the spectators who cure
to pay for their sport, says a writer
in the Strait's Echo.
Thousands of others packed them-
selves close in the arena itself --
perilously close it seemed to me ---
and witnessed the fight without
payment. These swayed this way
and that with the progres of the
fight. Sometimes, I ate told, the
spectators number as many as 10,-
000; on this occasion there were be-
tween six thousand and seven thou-
sand present.
Business began in earnest as soon
as the combatants were loosed.
Their heads came together with a
thud, they separated, came together
again and pushed and strained for
an advantage. In all this wild push-
ing and straining one saw that the
combatants were manoeuvring to
bring their horns into play. Again
their heads came together, and
this time the favorite worked one
of his horns until the tip of it was
well under his opponent's neck.
\1 r as
sudden jerk upward ho
lifted the other buffalo clean off his
forefeet. S1..,,ty he turned around
almost a complete circle his oppon-
ent meanwhile being impaled on
one of his horns. Then his neck
muscles relaxed and the other
buffalo's forefeet found ground
again.
At once the wounded animal
sratched himself out of danger and
managed to gore the favorite in the
eye. Maddened with pain and
rage, the favorite bore down his
opponent with sheer fury of his at-
tack. Tho latter fled. The fight
had lasted fifteen minutes.
He flees only to din. The owner
of the victorious buffalo slaughters
him, cuts hien up, distributes the
meat among his friends and sends
the entrails, the muzzle, the tail
and other parts of the animal to
his previous owner. A quaint cus-
tom is observed. The owner of the
loser fires off a gun as soon as he
receives his 'present' as an inti-
mation that he will get another
buffalo within the year to match the
victor. The penalty should he not
fulfill his words is $100, a like sum
being handed over to him should
the bull he challenged not be forth-
coming to meet his new competi
tor.
WRONG AG:1IN.
A political speaker was attacking
the Government of the day with
rnore venom than reason. A pian
at the back of the hall at last cried
out, "You're wrong, sir!" A little
nettled, the orator continued with-
out heeding. Presently, in answer
to another strong assertion, came
again, "You're wrong, sir !" Tho
speaker looked angry, but continu-
ed on the warpath. "You're wrong,
sir!" again rang out.
Angrily addressing tho persist-
ent one, the orator cried, "Look
here, I could tell this man some-
thing about this Government which
would slake his hair stand on end."
"You're wrong again, sir !" came
exultantly from the critic, as 110
stood up and removed his hat. His
head was as bald as the proverbial
billiard ball.
