Colborne Township did honor to itself
and showed the true spirit of enterprise
and progress on Monday when tate rate-
payers tolled up a tine majority for the
granting of a bonus of 420000 to the
St. Marys and Western Railway. Tho
vote cast amounted to 347, of whirfn
210 were in favor of the grant and 107
against. leaving the majority 133. The
result is very gratifying when the op-
position 1s considered. In Blanshard
however, those opposing the grant of a
similar sunt succeed 2d It defeating the
by -1 tw by 18 voxes Every argument poo

going so far ;.s to say that Usborne.
Intended to defeat It and so Blanshard
would have to pay the whole amount and
the sister township get off without pay-

A VETERAN TEACHER PASSES AWAY
One after another the veteran and stur
dy omen of our community are passing to
rest, leaving only the lustre. of their un-
tarnished and well regulated lives for
the guidance and emulation of those
who follow. Tins week it b.comes our
sad duty to record the demise of Thomas
Gregory, be having passed to his reward
on Friday last. Fur ten or twelve years
deceased had been in delicate rrealtn, but
was always hopeful, and after many a
season of Indisposition his condition

of renewed confidence, and he would be
as bright and as cheerful as ever, but
the last attach was unmistakable, and
though gradual the ravages of the dts-

he came to Canada six years later. Till
the age of 10 ne lived with his parents
on a farm, near Newcastle. County of
Durham, receiving his primary education
at the Grammar School there. To equip

he entered in 1862, he attended the
Toronto Normal School, where he prov-
