At a large puede sleeting held in the Town hall on Friday night last on a motion of F. W. Gladmau and T. F3, C..rling to auuunt a by-law to grant $10,000 to the St. Marys and Wcetern Ontario hallway Company the citlzette urlat, lii ously expressed tnetnaelvea In favor of it. The matter wag pretty thoroughly dis- .uiscd by the clilzens and by Messrs. Graham and ltice of £t. Marys and the engineer, Mr. Ilyde; and although many citieens had previously considered $10,- unt. 100 much, the Information they re- eelved speedily !cd them to conclude that It was not an unresonable sum, and the general opittiot( is that the by-law will carry without great difficulty. Itecve McCallum was voted to the chair and he explained the object of the meet- ing. The council, he said, had met the St. Marys gentlemen earlier in the even - Ing to see whether a lesser sum, say r?:,,000. would not do, and to discuss other details. Now he wished a full die ea -n314)71. Let us thresh it out now and not egU'al afterwards. The first point la Do we want the road." and Lire an- s•.ver came from n r n ttanY Teo." Mr. Graham was then called on. Ile reviewed the history of Use company, steting that a number of Exeter men were appointed provlelonal directors, but having dropped out St. Slarys men were appointed in their places. They had already spent $400,e00 on the road :Irons Embrey to St. Marys. It would r•uet $100,00(1 to get out of 3'. Marys thin way -for a bridge and to cross the G. T. R. It would cost $25,000 a mile to Exeter and heavier west. The com- pany had mu nlcliral aid In the part built to the e_tent oe 680,('tm. They had paid their Will and had a little left. Mr. Rice said they were not asking a cent too mu^h. It was Impossible to fl - elute the scheme On a leaser basis from Exet. -, A11 they wanted wan enough loads to cetabllah the road and put It on a sound financial basis so that the R. wou:d take it over. The euhsidy granted 'was not large and while Inc C. P. He did not want to urge unduly as H was not ab- solutely necessary to come to Exeter, but wished to give all the Information pos- sible and then It Exeter wanted the road they should page the by-law. Considerable discussion took place as to where tee elation would be located. Within floe yards of tie Town Hall was as definite information as could be hid at present. The terms of payment were also discussed. -- A noticeable feature of the meeting was that within a half-hour of 11• corn menet-met,t the pelt,t of leterest and dis- russtem seened to be not. An extraordinary feature in connection with the Winter Carnival and Ice Palace at Montreal, Feb. 10 to 20, has been the sale of the Official Souvenir, issued by the 'Canadian Pictorial.' The first ed- ition was exhausted in halt a day and the second day saw the publishing of- t e lobo men 1 howlingt •eda of- fices besieged by and boys, clamoring for Souvenir Num- bers to sell. The capacity ot the preasea has been doubled and the start is work- ing day and night to supply the demand, which has already gone beyond all hounds.
