THURSDAY, Jan. 21, 1909 NOTE AND COMMENT Dr. '!.udot.iid, for seventeen years) member of the !louse of Commons from East Huron, has been appointed Post- master at Lolidort. mu •h to the dissat- isfaction of the Liberals) of that :sty, who expected ha: plum for a local titan. We are in receipt from the Canadian bostrruncnt of the particulars of the (Icer ernment'a Act of Teat session regard- ing Old Age .annuities, under whloh provision may be nutdc by ue for eiery man. woman or child agalnet want or poverty In old age. The Act Is the work of Sir Richard Cartwright, and is to our opinion one of the beet Utitga dealt with by at.y government 1n Canada for many years. So valuable to the people ot Canada do we consider it that we will publish the details nest week, and would advise our readers to lead It car, fully, cut it out and keep it for future reference. The letter "u" Is causing consider- able stir In the newspapers of Ontario because Dr. Beath, Superintendent of Edut•atlon. Intends having such words as labor, color. spelled In the new text books thus,— labour, colour ; because It 1s said that root words are spelled that way. That may be true, but a'. to just as true that thin 1e no sufficient rea- son why the better tustom, turd which has been vogue for years, should be de- parted from. But then, why worry, it will never get any farther tl.an the text books. Teachers won't leach it, students won't practise it, and bustnests sten won't use 'it. The proper thing to do 1s shorten, not 1angtten words. If Dr. Soath would spend his time lopping orf the "Ugh" from such words as though, thorough, etc., L would bo spent to better advantage.
