THI; 1051).1 1•, .I it lilt 1 1 1 1)(1.4 The Election Result The overs set Whitney at t i:, I, .ii, e.. - .:,,natty goes to prove the fact that the people of Ontario appreciate a government that fulfills its promises. Dutiug the election campaign just p,ts,e,1 nothing could be said in criticism of the govern. tient in this regard, and on that point alone the government deserved a con- tinuance of puwei sur auwthet' pails&• !limitary terns. it was not expected that the old majority could be kept, but when the people return a govern- ment to power with such a large maj- ority its Whitney got on Monday it is conclusive proof that they want More of the same kind of government. Such a majority is apt to turn the heads of most men, but Premier Whit- ney does not belong to that class of rnen whose heads are readily turned by popularity and in his strong hands even such a large majority will be used for the public good. The result also proves the fact that when the op- position does not object to the legisla- tion as it passes the house, the people will not place touch confidence in their criticism on the hustings. Everybody reads the doing of the parliament to- day and they form their impression as the business of the house proceeds, not during the heated campaign of three or four weeks. NOTE AND COMMENTS That "last awful week" was not a circumstance to last Monday. Whitney asked for "a square deal" and I guess he got it. Andrew Porter made a beautiful dash in Centre Huron. With half a chance he would have won out. Little sympathy was expressed for Rev. Hossack in Toronto. Wonder who hived all those Tories in Toronto. Whitney's temperance legislation seems to have met the views of both parties. How South Perth could choose Stock instead of Monteith is a mystery to Conservatives. Eilber still has his finger on the pulse of Stephen township, and Step- hen is satisfied with Either. The Quebec Election The Provincial election in Quebec was held the sense day as the Ontario election, and resulted in the Conser- vatives making considerable gain in the province, although the Liberal majority is still large. 50 Liberal and 22 Conservative members are elected. In the last Legislature there were 6.1 Liberals and 9 Conservatives. DROWNED IN PON D. Mitchell, June S. -Thomas Hall, a young man of about twenty years of age, was drowned in the mill pond Sunday afternoon. Along with a number of companions they had entered the pond and were swimminkr across when young Hall, who was u, the rear, was seized with cramps and sank in about ten feet Of water before he was able to c► y for help. Whitney Sustained. An Immense Majority in the House. Conservatives 87, Liberals 18. The result was far beyond the expectations of the most sanguine Conserva- tives, while the Liberals expected to reduce it to about 20. Toronto remains solid Conservative. London gave Beck a fine majority of 1404. The defeat of Hon. Nelson Monteith in South Perth is keenly felt by Conservatives as he made an excellent Minister of Agriculture. Rev. Hoseack's defeat in Toronto seems to meet with general favor. Changes were made in twenty-four rid- ings, the Conservatives gaining seventeen and the Liberals seven.
