has again done ine the honor of select-
ing me as the standard-bearer of the
party in the cooling Provincial con-
test. After years of faithful and con-
scientious service as your representa-
tive, 1 think that I can with no small
degree of confidence again solicit your
support. During ruy first tern) in the
Legislature. I, with a faithful opposi-
tion, fought against fearful odds to ob-
tain honesty and fair• play as well as ju-
dicious and righteous management of
the affairs of this Province. I nowam
supporting a Government formed to
carry out the principles for which we
struggled, and am convinned that a
close comparison of the conduct of af-
fairs with that of the previous Gov-
ernment, will cause every right think-
ing man. I care not what his politics,
to give it and its acts a hearty endor-
sation.
i do not in this address intend to
give an extended review of all the leg-
islation of the past four years. as the
platform) is the proper place for such
discussion. Nor do I suppose that
what are known as hide -bound or
strong party men among my oppon-
ents, will endorse me, no wetter how
strong a case I may make out for Le
Government, but I appeal to the hon.
esty of the great independent elector-
ate which does its own thinking, and
makes and unmakes Governments ac-
cording as they come up to its ideate.
To this section of the electors, the true
hope of our country, I can appeal as
an honest roan to honest, fair-minded
men and ask thein to give the patriotic
and honest Whitney Government an-
other four years' extension of their
support.
Thanking you all in advance for
what ! believe will prove on election
day. . fulfillment of my request.

Yours sincerely,

Liberal Candidate Suicides.
Forest, May 1t. -Montagu Smith,
Liberal candidate in East Lambton
and private banker here, committed
suicide here about 8:30 o'clock this
morning. No one witnessed the deed,
the victim) of his own band being found
shot to death probably half an hour
after he bad fired the shots. He left a
letter which said:
"I find the mental strain in conne^-
tion with the political campaign such
as to worry me all day and cause me
loss of sleep at night. i find, too, that
i have not the tact for this kind of life.
The result must be only to bring dis-
grace upon myself and the Liberal
party. The only way out is what I
am about to do. I know it will be a
great. blow to my brother and sisters,
but i cannot help it. For the past
three years i have had some trouble
which caused loss of sleep."
Mr. Smith was the picture of robust
health, and so far as anyone here
knows he had no mental worry what-
ever. No one understand(, what he
refers to as having troubled him for
the past three years.
The suicide of Smith was most delib-
erate. Ile had repaired to the water
closet at the rear of his hank building,
and when found was still clutchffftr the
32 -calibre revolver. He had fired four
shots into himself.
