Year 1908
A B}y••law to authorize the Municipal Council of
the Vllage of Exeter to payto W. A. Gibb Com-
pany of the City of Ilamilon in the County of
Wentworth. Packers of Dried Fruit, the sum or
46110.00 for the purchase of the site and land now
used and occupied by the said W. A. Gibb Company
to, their evaporating process in the saki Village of
Exeter.
WHEREAS at a meeting of the Ratepayers of
the said Village of Exeter it was resolved that
the above By -Law should be eubmitted to a vote
and if carried that the said tum of 1500. he paid
to the said W. A. (llbb Company on the terms and
conditions get forth and contained in a preliminary
agreement made and entered into by and between
the said Municipal Council and the said W. A. Gibb
Company.
AND WHEREAS the said Municipal Corpor-

tion of the said Ratepayers,
AND WHEREAS it is necessary to appoint
the time, places and officers for taking the votes
of duly qualified voters upon this By-law.
AND WHEREAS it may be necessary to levy
and collect the said aum of X500.00 by special rate
upon the whole rateable property of the said Village
during the year tfleet.

rateable property of the said Village accord-

icipality to pay to the said W. A. (libb Com-
pany the said sum of 1500.00 upon the lento and
conditions expressed in the said preliminary
agreement.
2. That if necessary for the purpose aforesaid
there shall be raised in and during the year 19(04 by

For the Village of Exeter for the
bear 1908.
A By -Law to authorize the Municipal Council of the
Village of Exeter to pay to The Connor Machine
Company. Limited, of the Village of Exeter, in the
County of Huron, Manufacturers. the sum of $600.00
for the purchase of a site and land to be used and
occupied by the said Company for manufacturing
(latoleae and other Engines, and other machinery,
in thesaid Village of Exeter, and to grant the said
Company a ace! yearly aasessment of $300.00 for all
rates except School rates for a period of ten years.
WHEREAS at a meeting of the ratepayers of the
said Village of Exeter it was resolved that the above
By -Law should be submitted to a vote, and if carried
that the said sum 01 1ti00.00 be paid to the said Connor
Machine Company, Limited, and the said flxedyearly
assessment the granted to the said Company, on the
terms and con.litions set forth and contained in a
preliminary Agreement mule and entered into by
and between the said Municipal Council and The
Connor Motor and Machine Company, of the said
Village of Exeter.
AND WHEREAS the said Municipal Corporation
deem it advisable to give effect to the said reeolution
of the said Ratepayers,

benture Debt of the said Municipality is not more

Council of the Village of Exeter, as follows: -
1. That for the purposes aforesaid it shall be law-
ful for the Reeve and Council of the said Municipality
to pay to the said Connor Machine Company, Limit-
ed, the said Poor of 1500.00 and to grant to them a
vett yearly assessment of $500.00 for a period of ten
yearn, beginning on the 31st day of December, 1906.

Mr. Siftou made an unexpected ad-
dress on the budget. Tbe ex -minister
took occasion to advise the Govern-
ment to establish a new depattuient of

Milton also commended Mr. Borden's
civil service reform platform, and ad-
vised Sir Wilfrid to adopt it.

WM. HASTINGS DEAD.
Parkhill, Mar. 23. -This town to -day
lost a highly respected resident, Wm.
Heating's, whose death occurred at his
home in bis l5th year. The lite of Mr.
Hastings and the history of Parkhill
are so interwoven that the one is really
the other. He was born in York
County, travelled largely, before settl-
ing down here when there was nothing
but woods, and grew up with the town.
He was very highly esteemed by every-
one. Two sone and one daughter sur-
vive.

news of last week contained an ac-
count of the marriage of Herbert C.
Clark of this village to Miss Brock of

congratulations to the happy couple

Last Monday was nomination meet-
ing. called to eleet a Conncillnr to fill
the vacancy on the Council Board
caused by the resignation of Andrew
Hicks. Quite a large number of the
ratepayers were in attendance. Only
two candidates were nominated, Fred
Wuerth and Michael Finkte' ine'r rat
Shipka. On Tuesday Mr. Finkbeiner
retired from the field, thereby}- leaving
Mr. Wuerth elected by acclamation.
Tbe general feeling of the people was
that there should be no contest.- Our
Merchants are getting in their assort-
ment of spring goods and no doubt our
citizens will appear in their "glad"

Detroit on Saturday for burial. -The
Rev. T. B. Westgate, who has been in
the South American missionary field
for the past few years, will give a re-
view of his work, illustrated by litue-
light views, on Wednesday night at
Holy Trinity church.

We are sorry that Mr. Hicks has seen
fit to resign, as under his leadership
the music rendered was much appreci-
ated. -Rev. Butt addressed the Ep.
worth League Convention at Elimville
on Friday atternoon and evening. -
The thaw of the early part of the week
caused the basement of the church to
become flooded with water. The drain
had become plugged up by the roots
of a tree, and consequently the water
could not get away. Workmen since
have been righting the matter. --Mr.
W. T. Colwill was in Toronto this
week on business.
VERY SAD -A telegram was receiv-
ed by Mrs. John Glavin conveying the
sad news of the death of her youngest
son Patrick, at the age of 20 years, who
died in St. Joseph's hospital, Albuquer-
que, New Mexico, after being severly
injured by the train. The deceased
was a very clever boy, and was a gen-
eral favorite in the neighborhood.
Leaving home a year ago, securing a
position as Stenographer. His many
friends will be indeed sorry to learn of
his death when just in the prime of
life. The remains arrived here Mon-
day morning and were taken to his
home. the burial taking place Tuesday
morning in St. Peter's cemetery. The
pall -bearers were six of his young
friends. To the bereaved mother and
family we extend our heart -felt sym-
pathies, this being the second death in
side of a year, owing to the death of
the father.

Sugar making time bas arrived and
reports say that several are tapping
their trees getting ready for the syrup
making. -Walter Hern spent Sunday
and Monda7 visiting his wife at God-
erich, who is quite ill at the home of
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. Thomp-
son. -Miss Aggie Hunter of Toronto
spent a couple of days under the par-
ental root. -Rev. Fair is conducting
reviyal services on the Whalenappoint-
ment.-Mrs. Win. Veal is still quite
ill and her daughter, Mr's. Jackson of
London is home waiting on her.-Tbe
Epworth League will hold a debate on
Monday evening next on "Resolved
that money has more influence than
Character," to be taken by Messrs.
Kerr and Godbolt, and Mr. Mead and
Joshua Johns respectively. Special
singing will also be provided and light
refreshments will be served. Admis-
sion 15c., or two for 25c. Everybody

DEATH -The death occurred on Mon-
day, March 23rd, of one of t'sborne
township's most highly esteemed re-
sidents, Isaac Whitlock Johns, of the
0th concession, et the age of ail years,
10 months and 0 days, Deceased bad
Buffered for years of lung trouble, be-
ing at times confined to his bed for
months, and again being able to be up
and about. The disease finally sapped
his vitality and death resulted as above
started. Deceased was a son of Rich-
ard Johns, was horn in the township
and always resided there. Early in
life he was adopted by the late Isaac
Whitlock, after whom he had been
named, and afterwards be lived on
the Whitlock farm. He married Sar-
ah Elford, daughter of Michael Elford
of ;.'obourg, formerly of Ushorne, and
•he with two sons survive, Fred,
teacher of Toronto. and Wesley at
home. Four brothers and two sisters
Also survive, John, Silas, Harry and
Joshua of Ceborne. Mrs. Harry Cud -
more of Crystal City and Mrs. Thos.
Cudmnre of Exeter. A sister, Sarah,
died about s year ago. Deceased was
a most excellent citizen being esteem
ed by everyone, and had been for
twenty years n member of the Method-
ist church boar(. He was a Reformer
in politics. The funeral took place to
the Exeter cemetery on Wednesday
afternoon.
