Meeting Favored Again Sub-
mitting The Gibbs By -Law
Without it doubt a very Large per
centage of the people of Exeter are in
favor of again submitting a by-law to
grant the Gibbs Evaporator Company
a free site. At least, such was the de-
cision of what was certaiuly it repre-
sentative meeting of the citizens in
the Town Hall 00 Monday night,
when the platter was discussed and a
standing vote taken. The vote stood
73 7. A nutnber of speakers were
called to the platform by Reeve Bobi-
er, who occupied the chair, and not all
of them were in favor of again sub-
mitting it, but considerable of the op-
position seemed to be owing to the
idea that they thought the Gibbs peo-
ple were forcing them to either grant
the site or they would withdraw from
town. As the meeting progressed,
however, the people were given to
understand that it wits not a challenge
by the company, but that the com-
pany had built on the strength of the
town voting them the free site, and
considered that under the circumistan-
stances the town, as a whole, should
favor the ranting of the site.
On opening the meeting, Reeve Bo -
bier spoke of the value of the industry,
the amount of money expended in a
poor season like last year ($5,000, not
$1:3,000, as had been reported), that
the town should support the action of
a number of citizens who had agreed
with the company to endeavor to pass
the by-law, that the feeling seemed to
he one of regret that the by-law had
not been passed, and now the Council
wanted a candid opinion of the meet-
ing as to whether it should be again
submitted.
Mr. L. !lardy said that the citizens
say the liminess omen guaranteed its
passing, but the Reeve said they had
promised to do their best to carry it.
Mr. Hardy thought one vote was en-
ough, did not like the idea of the Com-
pany saying they would withdraw,
and he was willing to guarantee that
another would he started if they did
withdraw.
*Mr. 'I'. 13. Carling said the Septem-
ber meeting had promised to do their
hest to curry the by-law, the sum ask-
ed was small, ($Ii00), the interest on
which would only be $2.i per year.
while the tax the Company would pay
on the plant would be $15, and prob-
ably a house would be built, and n
larger tax would then be received.
Under the circutelstances the bite
should be granted, and tie hoped the
sleeting would favor it.
Mr. 'I'. 11. ,IcCallu ii was sorry the
Ilv•law had notpassed, the September
meeting thought there wits no danger
of its failing when they promised to
gave a choirs program in the hall after. submit it. Three had been no time to
themII.IIaIlodge electing, Mr. \fte isubmit the hydaaw before the apple
season opened, The Company had
131lkw•ill occupied the chair. Those shown confidence in the town, and we
taking part wee,•: \Win. fiery)•, cornet should be deserving of it.

Hein, reading: MI44e4 (aadys Bisset', challenge issued by the Company. Ile

instrlluuentals. Miss Johns, Mr. Brown espied. Atter considerable discussion
Mr. Hart noll was led to 1011eve that it
was not intended ars it challenge, and
he seemed to withdraw his opposition

Mr. L. 11. Dickson went over the cir-
cumstances of the promise of the citi•
zens, the vote, the conditions of the
by-law and agreement. We are not
anxious to help Gibbs, but to help our-
selves, and we do so by helping to get
industries. The Company is a respon-
sible one, the amount to purchase the
site would be less than one twill on the
the dollar for one year, the agreement
is all in favor of the town, and the
should have the industry for 1'I v,a1
any way.
The vote was here taken and result-
ed 73.7 in favor of another vote.
Mr. Ham, the Company's represent-
ative, who was in the audience, was
called to the platform. Ile appreciated
the interest taken, liked to hear those
in opposition express their opinions.
He gave a resume of the operations,
the burning of the old building. the
agreement with the citizens, etc. He
said the Company was not begging,
nor challenging, but wished to make
the industry large to help themselves
and the town.
Mr. C.)bblediak, of Exeter North,
also spoke on the responsibility of the
Company, their square dealings, and
the burning of the old building. Ile
favored the grant.
During the meeting the best of order
prevailed, and the many questions that
were asked and answered. and the dis-
cussions which followed, was done in a
most friendly spirit, and evinced the
great interest taken in the platter by
the ratepayers, and their desire of
gaining as much information about the
subject as possible.
