Mr. John Wood of town and Mr.
Phin Hunter of Usborne were last
week appointed by the Ontario Gov-
ernment to act as expert Judges at
different fairs throughout Ontario, the
former on beef cattle and sheep, and
B
the latter heavy horses. Both are
competent judges and the appoint-
ments are well deserved. They com-
menced their duties last week.-
Joseph Berryhill, well-known to
many of our older residents, died at
St. Marys, on Tuesday last at the age
of fat) years. The deceased in his early
days was a man of powerful physique,
of jovial disposition and possessed
many excellent qualities. His early
days were spent farming in Biddulph
and London townships, but his declin-
ing days were spent in retirement at
St. Marys. He leaves to mourn hie
loss a widow, one brother (Samuel),
but no children.
Miss Martha Carling has been grant-
ed a first-class teachers' certificate by
the Educational Department. It will
be retnenbered that three weeks ago
we stated that sbe had made a high
percentage, 70`.x, in all subjects except
Mineralogy on which she did not
write, owing to the principal of Brant-
ford Collegiate saying it was not nec-
essary. It happened that Miss Carling
wrote on this subject the previous
year and the Educational Department
has done right to grant the certificate
which was so well earned.
Kirkton Fair this year promises to
b0 bigger and better than ever. To-
morrow (Friday) is the concluding
day. The directors and ever untiring
secretary, Mr. A. Doupe, have - tut
forth a special effort this year, and if
favored with fine weather doubtless
one of the largest crowds ever seen at
Kirkton will be present on this occa-
sion. A green trot has been arranged
and as there is keen competition the
event promises to he one of deep in;
terest. The balloonist is on the
ground and the ascension will be an-
other interesting feature. Everybody
will go to Kitkton Fair.
A Pretty Artesia Wedding.
.One of the season's prettiest house
weddings was solensnized on Tuesday,
October let, at twelve o'clock, noon,
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John
Snell, Alpert street, when their young-
est daughter, Mae M., was united in
marriage to Mr. Clarence H. Smith of
Ingersoll. Hev. A. H. Going, pastor
of James street Methodist church,
officiated, in the presence of about
tifty guests. The bride, who was
given away by her father, was becom-
ingly attired in a silk embroidered
French Voile, over Taffetta, beauti-
fully designed and trimmed, and car-
ried A shower lapquet of bridal roses
and lily of the valley. The little flow-
er girl, Miss Lillian Snell. a niece of
the bride. was prettily dressed in
white organdy, and carried a basket
of pink and white carnations. A
pleasant accompaniment to the happy
hour was the music by Mrs. Artihur
Brown of Sarnia. After congratula-
tions. the guests repaired to the din-
ing room where a sumptuous repast
was daintily served by young lady
waitt•cssey. An attestation to the
popularity of the bride was the beauti-
ful array of lovely presents of silver-

Chance for Another Industry.
Mr. Thos..lackson of the Jackson
Co. of Cliuton, manufacturers of cloth-
ing. was here last week looking over
the town with a view to establishing
a branch factory in Exeter. Ile says
that they will establish a factory here
or in \\'inghaut under certain condi-
tions, the factory to employ about 30
hand, all the year round. The condi-
tions, should the company decide up-
on Exeter, would be a loan of $5000
for a tern] of years, the company to
pay interest and to commence to pay
brick the principal within a few months
after commencing operations. The
matter is worth the consideration of
the citizens. On Monday Reeve
Bottler, Councillors Heaman and Johns
and Messrs. T. H. McCallum and J. A.
Stewart went to Clinton itt the request
of the oouncil and inspected the Jack-
son factory, the knitttng factory and
other manufacturing concerns with a
view to determining the value of such
to a town. The committee was favor-
ably impressed with the possibilities
and hope that the town will secure
one or more of those industries.
Assault or no Assault?
Some of the papers of South Huron
last week contained a more or less
lengthy account of an alleged assault
case at Hensel!, stating that Miss
Maggie Brown of Seaforth, who was
staying at the home of Miss Annie
Moore, was assaulted by an unknown
Indian. Iligh Constable Grundy of
Goderich and Provincial Detective
Raeburn of Toronto investigated
the case and the latter claims that
there was no truth whatever in the
alleged assault. The detective secured
the professional set vices of Dr. Gunn
of Clinton, who made an examination
of the young lady, who it was claimed
was seriously ill of the shock, and the
doctor claimed, so says the detective,
that there was no evidence whatever
of assault.
Hicks' Forecasts for October.
A Regular Storm Period is cental on
the 8th, covering the 7th to the llth.
The new Moon falls on the celestial
equator on the 7th. This fact will
precipitate storm conditions at the
beginning of (his period. Low baro-
meter, very warm for the season and
general storms of thunder, wind and
rain will set in about the 7th in the
west, and during the 8th, 9th and 10th
these storms will take wide paths in
their eastward sweep across the coun-
try. People along the gulf and Atlan-
tic coasts, also the Pacific, should not
forget that equinoctial storms are
very probable abort this period.
There will be wisdom in keeping
storm and weather eyes wide open on
and about the great lakes at the wind-
up of this period. High barometer
from the northwest will push severe
todangerous gales over the lake re-
gions. all to be followed by marked
change to colder, bringing frost to
much of the country, central and
northward, from about the Oth to 13th.
Harvest Horse Festival.
The harvest home festival of the
James street Methodist church held
under the auspices of the Ladies Aid
on Sunday and Monday was one of the
most successfulever held in thechtircb.
Although a little dull the weather on
Sunday was free from rain and two
very large congregations assembled to
listen to the sermons by Rev. James
Livingstone of London and the solos
by Mrs. (Rev.) R. Smith Baker of Ail-
sa Craig. In the morning Hev. Liv-
ingstone preached an appropriate ser-
rnon dealing with the four seasons of
the year and making an application of
the same to the life of man. in the
evening he took for his text: "The
Fatherhood of God as illustrated by
the Fatherhoodatf Man." After a few
introductory remarks., showing the
kindliness and forbearance of the
Heavenly Father, that the life of Jesus
was an illustration of the one idea.
"Our Father," and that His life was
to snake us realize the true relation-
ship of Father arid child, Mr. Living -
atone illustrated the goodness of God
• in giving Provision, Protection, Ed-
ucation and Training to man by refer-
ence to the thoughtfulness of the
earthly father toward his child in
these particulars. The father provides
' for the wants of his childt•en, protects
them from danger, gives then] educa-
tion and training. He believed that
God loved to see the development of
the child as the earthly father does,
and that God does not love stupidity.
(Ind trains us to let go the things of
earth and take hold of God. Selfish-
ness is the great sin of the Universe.
Our duty is to gather, to build and to
scatter. not to gather and keep for
ourselves all we can lay bald of. Mr.
Livingstone proved himself to he what
his reputation has proclaimed him to
he. one of the most able oratory 01'
the Methodist choral. A good voice,
a clear and distinct pronunciation. a
fine command of langrlage, an appre-
ciation of nature. A vivid imagination
and a we'll developed brain behind it
