Dated this loth day of September, 19'i . Jos. Senior, Clerk_ Steals Cattle --Pleads Guilty Angus Ford, a young man Of about 23 years of age, residing on the 14th concession of Stephen, Was arrested in London on \Ve dnesday evening of last week on information sent to the city by Constable. W. J. Bissett of town on suspicion of stealing cattle from Geo. O'Leary of Parkhill about two weeks Lpreviously. Constable Bissett went to ondon on Thursday and brought the prisoner here. On Friday he appear- ed before the magistrates and, pteed- ing guilty, was sent to Guth:rich for trial. Ford, it appears, wanted a driv- er and he came to Exeter and bargain- ed with Mr. E. E. Hackney to trade two steers for a horse. Ford called himself Lewis. He took the horse but failed to appear with the cattle. Mr. Hackney bound that the young man's mune was Ford, :end judging some- thing was wrong drove back and got his horse. In a day or two Ford ap- peared with the cattle, but not having the $25, did not get the horse. Mr. Hackney promised to keep the cattle two weeks until Ford raised the mon- ey. In a few days the deal was com- pleted. Mr. O'Leary in the meantime missed his cattle. and hearing some- thing of Ford's deal came to Exeter identified the steers. Constable Bis- sett was informed of the facts and im- mediately set the law in motion, with the result that Ford was recognized on the train going to London and ar- rested on his arrival. The horse is now Lack in Mr, Hackney's stable, the cattle are back to Mr. O'Leary's pas- ture and the young man is up for trial. Landed Another Industry The \V. A. Gibbs Co. of Hamilton will build an apple evaporator in Exe- ter, to employ thirty-five hands for at least three months in the year. The building will have t► floor space of 130 by 100 feet in each of two storeys, will cost $3001 and will be in operation this fall. Mr. Hamm, manager of one of the Company's evaporators at Cale- donia, interviewed the council last Wednesday evening and offered to es- tablish an evaporator here, provided the town would provide a free site. The council was favorably impressed with the nian, the company and the industry and instructed Reeve Bottler to call a meeting of the business then and others for three o'clock on Thurs- day afternoon. This was done and considering the short notice a fair number were gathered in the town Hall at the appointed tine, when the proposition was laid before the meet - mg. Reeve Dobler occupied the chair. Others who addressed the meeting were Messrs. S. Martin. T. H. McCal- lum, D. A. Ross, L. IT. Dickson, H. 8p:tektn:tn, W. 1f. Levett and mem- bers of the Council, all of whom were in favor of the council's submitting a by-law to the ratepayers to grant a free site. It was moved by Messrs. Spackman and Levett and carried unanimously: 'Most this Meeting asks the council to submit a by-law to grant a free bite to the W. A. Gibbs Com- pany for an apple evaporator." This was satisfactory to Mr. Hamm, who iutmediately telephoned to headquar- ters and the reply was received that he proceed at once to build the fac- tory. The by-law will not be submitted until the municipal election at New Year, when it is also proposed to slab - mit, it cow by law. The site chosen for the evaporator is north of Station street and east of Mrs. Horrell's residence and is it por- tion of the late Isaac Catlings estate. The Company immediately purchas- ed the land for $500 on the strength of the Council submitting the by-law, and prop.p,.e to at once commence the erection of the building so that the Sale Registers. Building operations have already been commenced and are being rapid- ly pushed forward Oldest Resident Dies Mrs. Geo. Armstrong, Exeter's old- est resident, died on Saturday morn- ing last in her 95th year, at the resi- dence of her son Irwin, Huron street. Although she had beetlrin feeble health for many years, and several times was so ill that death was almost hourly ex- pected, still she had borne up remark- ably well and less than a week ago she had been up and about the house. She was possessed of wonderful vitality but increasing years gradually wore It away and before her demise she had become very thin and frail. The late Mrs. Armstrong was mentally strong right up to the time of death and was able to converse intelligently with those about her. As a wife and neith- er she was kind and considerate and although she lived many years beyond the allotted number she will bt' much missed in her home. Burn in Tyrone, Ireland, in 1812, she there, as Miss Catharine Patterson, in 1838 married the late Mr. Geo, Armstrong. in 18311 they carne to Canada, settling first in Prince Edward County, later moving to North street, St. Thomas, where they resided for nine years. Here three children were born to theta. Fif- ty-eight years ago in 1810 the family moved to the Township of Usborne, east of Exeter, and took up a home- stead on the 4th concession, the farm now being owned and occupied by Mr. Frank Kernick. After twenty-eight years of residence on the faro] they moved to Exeter. where Mr. Arm- strong died six years later. Since the husband's death Mrs. Armstrong has resided with her son Irwin. Scott and his wife have found the sea of matrimony rather rough and a few days ago Mrs. Scott left her husband and carne to Detroit. Mrs. Scott refused to enter a complaint against her husband and he was re- leased, but he declares that he will yet get his child. FiRE;' AT AMA CRAiG. The fire started about one o'clock in the afternoon and l4fore anything could be dome the whole building sets in fiances. They managed, however. to get out a part of the contents, but the building was completely destroyeed, and it was with great difficulty that the adjacent hnild- Ings were saved.
