Creech, who went to Ithica last week, sends word of the death of her another five hours after her arrival. Death is supposed to be due to heart disease its she had not been ill previously. Word has been received here of the death in North Berkley, Cal., of a for- mer resident of town, Mrs. N. J. Clarke, mother of Mrs. Miller White, who now resides in California. She was 60 years of age. Mr. Thos. Oke and Mr. Alward of Kingsville .pent Monday evening shaking hands with friends here. Mrs. Mary Oke, who has been in Kingsville for some months, returned here with them and will remain for some time. About 1 o'clock Sunday morning the evaporator at Exeter North was clea- ts oyed by fire. It was owned by W. A. Gibb of Hamilton who bad repaired it and made it ready for operation during the past few weeks. There is no doubt that the fire was of incendi- ary origin. The ladies in the millinery rooms are busy this week, preparing for the openings. Miss Siebert of Berlin is with Messrs. Snell & Rowe, Miss White And Miss Northcott with Mes- srs. Jones & Clark, Miss Rickbeil with Miss Morlock, Miss Livingstone with Mr. J. A. Stewart. One of the best and brightest things we can give, is kind words. They have well been likened to the bright flowers of earth's extistence. Use them everywhere, but especially around the fireside; they will make e paradise out of a hovel. Nothing can heal at wounded heart, or cheer a crushed spirit like kinds words. Let us not be so careful how we use then), for they are the greatest blessing earth can give. People who write things which they would like to see printed in a news- paper, should bear in ruind that what they write as their personal opinion should be fathered by them, and when they write stuff that is not fit for them to attach their names to it should never be printed. Remember, the rule Of all decent newspapers and you will never have occasion to put on the shoe. This is the rule which we give in all kindness. Never ask a newspaper to do anything you are ashamed to do yourself. it isregrettnhle that Miss Martha Carling, daughter of Mr. T. 13. Carling, who wrote for a non-professional first- class teacher's certificate at Brantford this summer, should he classed with those who billed when she succeeded in getting an ;overage of 70,0 on the papers, her lowest mark being 68 on Geometry and her highest 07% on Al- gebra. flawing taken honors she is classed with those who failed, owing to the fact that Mr. Burt, the princi- pal, did not take up Mineralogy with the class t hat should have taken the work, consequently at the examina- tion they did not write on that paper. Undoubted the Education Department will grant Miss Carling a certificate, if not now, then on her passing anexam- ination on this subject alone at a fu- ture examination. 1t should not be expected (haat she should try the whole examination again. W. F. ABBOTT, Cehtralla Just to convince you that Exeter is not at a standstill we may say that at present there are no fewer than twelve residences in the course of construc- tion, besides scores that are being greatly improved in accommodation and appearance, while during the past six months a large number of homes have changed bands at high figures. The houses being built are owned by Mr. H. Bedford, Sanders street; .Ur. \V. Miners and Mrs. H. Gilley, Wil- liam street, Messrs. E. H. Fish, \V. Blatchford, J. N. Howard, Rowe & Atkinson, Main street; Messrs. W. Howey, Snell & Zuefle, Andrew street; Mr. Taylor. Albert street; Mrs. Rooke, Rowe & Atkinson, Elizabeth. With this increase the demand is still un- satisfied, and several parties have de- cided to build next year. A little difficulty between two cous- ins in the township of t shorne, Wm. N. Glenn and Geo. Glenn, was aired in the Town Hall before ,Magistrates \V. D. Sanders and John Fanner Monday afternoon, with the result that \Ver. Glenn was fined $10 and costs and bound over to keep the peace for one Year. The evidence showed that the ill feeling seemed to arise first over a money matter. Wm. owing George a sum of money, which, however, was paid and then the former accused the Latter of opening letters. Finally the two met when driving to their post of- fice and one seemed to think that the other did not take the right side of the road, and a scrap ensued in which George, who is aged about 20, while the other is about 10, got rather rough- ly used. hence the court proceedings. The evidence indicated that 'William struck George and that the blow ens not in self defence, consequently the fine. L. H. Dickson appeared for Geo. Glenn and J.G. Stanbury for W.Glenn. 111•01111"141140441111411111•110/111411 Alt. Kint;an ha• returned from To. ioo, Mntr. (leo. Armstrong of Pat is is vis- iting here. Mr. Alf.
