W. Whitehead's farm for a term of
years, taking possession this fall. -

spent a few days with his father here.
His sister Gertie returned with hint to
attend Detroit Fair. She will also

cia Durdle of Brussels spent Sunday at
the fornler's home here, also Mr. and

spent a few days in Seaforth, the
guest of Mrs. T. Wheeler, formerly of
our burg. -The showery weather has
prevented the farmers from finishing
their harvest also Making it rather un-
pleasant for the Indies to play croquet.

Jas. Beattie has sold his land at
Laugham, and is expected home short-
ly. -Dr. Carr is expected home from
the %Vest this week. -Fire broke out
in John Williams stable on Monday
night last and before anything could
be done the entire building and con-
tents were destroyed. The fire is sup-
posed to be the result of boys playing
with tnatcbes.

pendicitis and despite the best Medical
cal e n:1d :attention he succumbed to
its deadly effects. Mr. Tufts was a
man noted for his strict integrity of
purpose, for his geniality of spirit and
by his many other good qualities he
endeared himself to all who had the
pleasure of his acquaintance. it may
be said he was a good roan in the coni-
munity, applying thoroughness and
honesty in all he undertook of a public
nature, and he filled not it few public
positions. Ile will not only be missed
by the family circle but the whole
neighb-srho.pd. lio is survived by it
sorrowing wife. one son .ind two
daughters. Funeral took place Tues-
day. -

he trent to (Guelph and on returning
in the evening spent a few hours at
the electric light plant, after which it
is supposed he went to the shop and
ended his life. No re.►son is given for
the deed. Ile leaves a wife and two
daughters.

piping for acetylene gas installed in

croquet have taken place on Daniel

The Annual ('hildrens' Day Festival
was held in the Evangelical church on
Sun(biy. In the afternoon Rev. Eidt
of Dashwood gaVe an eloquent address
on "Strength." In thi evening a de-
lightful program WAS given by the
choir and the Sunday School. The
chinch war crowded to the doors and
all enjoyed the evening's entertain-
ment. Proceeds amounted to about
410,-Dea'h has saddened the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Heist and only
the memo(y of a dear little babe is left.

Visitors to the Canadian National
h:xhil'itian will again have an oppor-
tunity of studying at close range the
barbaric Iggatt•ates from (he Phillip -
pine lsian(ls, whose tillage last year
created such a sensation in 'Toronto.
The exhibit this year will be more
interesting even than it was last year,
and visitors will see the world's most
interesting wild people living as they
live at horse. Grass -thatched huts
will dot the enclosure, and all :wound
the intuitive industries of these strange
people will be seen in operation. All
the sports and pastimes will be shown,
and these merry head-hunting dog -
eaters will show Canadians how their
own ancestors may have lived when
the world was young. The Igorrotes
are as wild as weeds, but are a likable
people, differing greatly from other
brown people.

S. C. Chowen, who has success-
fully conducted the general store here
for some time has disposed of the busi-
ness to Sam. G. Lampert of Devizes,
who will take possession shortly. Mr.
Chowen, through his honest and cour-
teous dealings with the public, has en-
deared himself to a host of friends
who will regret very much his depart-
ure from our midst. Mr. Lamport,
however, comes highly recommended
ae a business man, with a reputation
of honesty and integrity and we be-
speak for him the liberal patronage
that has been accorded his predeces-
sor. We extend to Mr. and Mrs. Lam-
port a hearty welcome to our tnidst.

Ernest Luther, who has been indis-
posed for the past few days, is we arc
pleased to state, convalescing. -Mrs.
Oscal` S►nither•s, has returned to Tor-
onto after- a pleasant visit with friends
in this vicinity. -A large number from
here attended the garden party at
Centenary on Friday evening. -Wes-
ley Reeder, formerly of the pith cot.,
but lately of Detroit, who visited re-
latives in this vicinity tecently, has,
accompanied by his wife, gone to
Saskatchewan, where they intend to
reside in future. --Miss Hope Willis.
who has been visiting her aunt, Mrs.
Usirr, Sr.. and other relatives and
friends here for the past three weeks,
left a few days ago for fort Huron,
where she will retrain for a few days
the guest of her cousin. Hev. George
L. Durr, prior to leaving for her home
in Minneapolis, Minn. -Hay has been
housed and the crop is better than was
expected. Roots are very much in
need of rain, and the pastures are
dried up. Oats, particularly' the late
ones, area very poor looking affair.
For a time this season it looked as if
the late oats were going to be the beat,
but the blight took them in their in-
fancy and now they are at a standstill.

The annual Sunday School picnic
was held in Nassau Davis' grove on
Thursday and proved a grand success.
Races and other amusements were the
order of the afternoon. Miss Hotham
of Deleware won the girls' race, while
in the small boys' two -Legged race Mas-
ter Alf. Hayter and Gordon Davis
came in first. All report a very pleas-
ant time. -Mrs. Johnston of Regina
and slater Miss Sadie Maine of Wat-
ford, after a pleasant visit with their
sister Mrs. Wm, Dickins and other
friends around here last week, have re-
turned to Watford. -Miss Hotham, af-
ter a pleasant stay with Mr. and Mrs.
F. Davis, has returned to her home in
Deleware.-Harvesting is the order of
the day. -The steel work on the two
new bridges will soon be completed,
the work is being done by the Petrolea
Bridge Company. The abutments on
Quinton's side road, built by Mr. Lob-
by of Dublin, has been completed.

Miss Tillie Simmons spent Saturday

friends. -Great commotion was caused
along our peaceful highway wnen a
motor car made its first appearance on
Tuesday. -Miss Carrol of Seaforth and
Miss Beck of London spent first of the
week with their aunt, Mrs. John
Glenn. -Among those from here who
are attending Toronto Exhibition are
Mrs. Gibb, Mrs. Mitchell, Mrs. F. Hor-
ton, S. Horton and "Jack" Glenn. -
G. Bolton, wife and family visited
friends in Hensall Sunday -Mrs. Bar-
ber of Forest Lake arrived here on
Wednesday evening to remain for a
time with her aunt, Mrs. Chas. Stew-
art. -Mrs. George Hobkirk and daugh-
ter Maggie, have returned frorn a
week's outing at Grand Bend. -Mrs.
W. Grandy of Deckerville, Mich., was
here for a few days calling on friends.
-Miss Teeple of Deckerville, Mich.,
was here first of the week the guest of
Mies Maude Glenn.-Qtute a number
of our ladies are busily engaged har-
vesting the onion crop which is not as
good as other years on account of the
drought.

Mrs. Pedler, who has been visiting
here the last week, has returned to her
home nl Craig. -Mrs. Green has re-
turned home from Sarnia, -Mr. Gil-
more spent a few days here last week.

son. -Mr. Zapfe, who has been visit-
ing his daughter in Sarnia, returned
home Saturday. --Mr. Havelle has com-
menced the cellar of his new house. -
Messrs. Hurdon and Jeckel were camp-

with K. Hamilton. -Mr. Willert and

A('CIIENT-Miss Gemmell, of Vit--
gins, who has been visiting with Mrs.
0. A. O(hhs, at their cottage here, met
with a painful accident Tuesday while
out driving. Mrs. Gibbs and Miss
Gemmell were driving with Mr. Gibbs'
new horse, which suddenly shied at
something on the side of the road,
cramping the buggy and throwing
'Miss Ge8u11011 sat of the buggy and
very heavily to the ground. The
young lady pluckily held on to the
lines, lane of which appears to have
wound (110(1nd the wheel, causing 1ho
horse to hack up and tramp on her leg
and foot, breaking both bones in her
leg below her knee and also badly
spraining her ankle. She Wats carried
into the residence of James Mollard in
front. of which the accident occurred,
where Dr. ('aw reduced the fracture.
Miss Gemmell was then taken to Mr.
Gibbs' cottage, from which she Was
conveyed to Stratford iHospital on
Wednesday.

A certificate is furnished with each ticket, and this certificate when executed by farmer
showing that laborer has worked thirty days or more, will be honored from that point
for a second class ticket back to starting points in Ontario, at 518.00, prior to
• Nov. 30th, 1907.
Tickets are good only on special Farm Laborers' trains and will be issued to women as well
aft to men, but will not be issued at half fare to children.
