Mr. II. Smith shipped a carload of
thoroughbred stock to Toronto for
Exhibition on Tuesday.
A very pretty verandah and a fresh
coat of paint has very much beautified
the home of Mr. D. McInnes.
Miss Lillian Amos very pleasantly
entertained it number of her young
friends Monday evening as did also
Miss Eainut Seldon at the home of
Mrs. Geo. Sainwell Wednesday even-
ing.
Through the agency of Mr. John
Spackman, Mr. A. Allen has disposed
of his dwelling on Andrew street to
Mr. Satn'l Baskerville of town. The
price paid was about $550.
A magistrates court was held at Mr.
T. M. Kay's residence on Tuesday
night last at which Tobias Staley was
charged by Walter 1Vestcott with re-
taining a stone hammer belonging to
him. The case was dismissed.
Mr. F. W. Tom returned to Toledo,
yesterday. Up to a few weeks ago
Mr. Tont was engaged in a partner-
ship tailoring business in that city,the
partnership has been dissolyed and he
will open up a similar new establish-
ment and conduct it himself.
Mr. W. T. England and Miss Minnie
Taylor, eldest daughter of Mr. John
W. Taylor, drove to Ailsa Craig yes-
terday and were there united in mar-
riage. The ceremony over the happy
couple took the train for Sarnia where
they will make their future home.
The young couple will have the best
wishes of their many friends for their
future happiness.
Mr. Thos. Hawkins met with a very
unpleasant runaway- accident at the
north end of town on Tuesday evening
last which might have been attended
with serious results. He had been de-
livering goods at %Vat. Davis' and on
turning the team around to go home
they took a sudden start and made a
bolt for liberty. Before be could get
theta under control they had gained
the opposite side of the road, threat-
ening serious results. Seeing the dan-
ger ahead Mr. Hawkins endeavored to
steer them into Mr. Aldworth's gate-
way but the line in some way became
fastened and tbe team, rig and occu-
pant went tumbling into the deep
ditch with Mr. Hawkins eventually
landed on top of the horses. Mr. Haw-
kins soon squared himself and with
the assistance of those who bad gath-
ered on the scene in the meantime suc-
ceeded in getting things righted again.
Luckily Mr. Hawkins and the rig es-
caped with only slight injury but the
team did not fare so well, both being
considerably scarred.
Mr. Mantle was in Durham this
week.
Miss Oertie Ketnp returned to Tor-
onto Thursday.
Miss Cora Fowell left Tuesday to
visit London friends.
Master Townsend is visiting his sis-
ter, Mrs. (Dr.) Malloy.
The Misses Sutton of London are
guests of Miss Annie Mill.
Miss Olive Quante has taken a posi•
lion as Milliner at Clifford.
Douglas Stewart has returned from
visiting his uncle at Omeinee.
Rev. and Mrs. Cranston of Palmer-
ston, are visiting at the Manse.
Mrs. Edwards and daughter of Birr
visited at the rectory last week.
Mrs. J. G. Mitchell and son Henry
are visiting at Mr. Thos. }Luton's.
Mr. Gen. Armstrong of Paris is vis-
iting his brother, Mr. I. Armstrong.
Dr. S. Thomas of London visited at
Mr. 8. Martins a few days this week.

Exeter Council
Council met in Town Hall, Monday,
Aug. 20. Councillor Knight absent.
Minutes of last meeting read and ap-
proved.
Messrs. S. Martin and Thos. Harvey
waited on the Council regarding a new
sidewalk along James street from Main
to Andrew streets. The matter will
be taken up by the Council.
Rev. Fear and Thos. Harton laid a
petition, signed by the trustees of the
Main street Methodist church, before
the Council, asking for a new cement
walk on Victoria street from Main at.
east to Andrew st., Mr. Fear expres-
sing the willingness of the congrega-
tion to assume their share of the cost.
Heaman—Fuke--that the prayer of
the petition be granted, and that the
property fronting on said improve-
ment be taxed 40 per cent of the total
cost. %Valk to be laid 4 feet wide and
that tenders for same be asked for, to
be banded in by Monday, Sept. 2nd.

James Weekes, Fire Chief. ask for
a new section hose for hand fire en-

Neaman- Johns—that this Council
advertise in the usual way as per pro-
visions of the Ontario Statute, for a
new concrete walk along James street
from Main to Andrew and that the
property fronting along the said im-
provement be assessed 40 per cent of
the total cost, Carried.
Neaman—Johns—that the Reeve
and Treasurer are hereby impowered
to borrow $1000 to the credit of the
Municipality for current expenditure.

Tho death wenn eft Monday night
of John 11. Hodgins, one of the pion-
eers of Biddulph Township. Ile was
72 years of age, and was widely
known. About a month ago his
health began to fail and he was forced
to quit his employment. Ile gradu-
ally sank until his demise Monday.
Mr. Hodgins had lived in Biddulph
Township all his life. He gave up
farming about ten years ago, going to
Lucan to live. He has been driving
the Lucan stage since then. His wife
predeceased_hint four' years. The late
Mr. Hddgins is survived by seven
children—four sons and three daught-
ers: Adam with the great Northern in
the Western States; Thomas and Jos-
eph. at Robinson, Alta.; and Walter,
on the homestead; Mrs. Rawlings,
Lucan. Warden Hodgins is tho only
surviving brother. The funeral took
place to -day Thursday to Lucan ceme-
tery.

Carmel and if dame rumor tells true

Monday, was thrown from it and re-
ceived very painful injuries. His
many friends will be pleased to know
that he is progressing as well as can

returned to Lucan afters pleasant vis-
it with her aunt Mrs. John Barry.—
John McLellan who has been quite ill
at the home of his sister in Lucan has
returned home much improved in
health.—Misses Johanna and Maggie
Regan of Detroit are bonne on a visit.
—The banns of marriage of Miss An-
gela Quarry and Mathew Doyle were
published by Fr. Forrester on Sunday.
TILE BowLERs.—Friday afternoon
and evening a lawn social and bowling
tournament was held on Father For-
rester's spacious lawn here. Great in-
terest was taken in the howling as
there were eight rinks entered. two
from Exeter, two from Parkhill, two
from Lucan and one each from Dash-
wood and Mt. Carmel. As there was
room for only six rinks to play at once
it was impossible to get the finale
played off before dark, and as two Ex-
eter rinks were left it was decided that
the finals should be played in that

ter undergoing medical treatment in
London.--Jno. R. Corbett, who has
been quite ill of late is recovering.
Misses Rosa, Amy and May Pierce re-
turned to their work in Toronto.
—We are sorry to learn of the illness
of Wesley albite. We hope for his
speedy recovery.—Robt. Alexander of
Strathcona, Alta., is visiting his broth-
ers and sisters, in this vicinity.—Mrs.
J. R. Smith purchased a cottage and
will shortly take up her residence in
Ailea Craig. -Threshing has began and
according to those who have finished,
the crops are fait'. Oats as tt rale are
rather light and some of the wheat. is
poor but still on the whole is a fair
crop. Barley is the best crop but is
not turning out as heavy as was ex-
pected.
