The married men of Crediton and

Entrance Examinations.
We give below the navies of the suc-
cessful candidates at the recent En-
trance Examination held at the var-
ious examination centres in East Hur-
on. On the whole the papers were
very fair, although the Literature
paper or Written Reading,as it is now
called required greater maturity of
thought than is usually possessed by
children of thirteen. The names are
arranged in two classes: Honor and
Pass. To pass a candidate must ob-
tain 390 marks out of a possible 650,
and for honors 487. The certificates
of successful candidates and the marks
of those who failed were sent out last
week.

The recent rains, although welcom-
ed for some reasons, have delayed the
haying considerably. All the grains
except oats seen) to be thriving. A
blight of some nature seems to he on
the oats. Whether it is due to frost,
an insect, or the quick change from
wet to extremely hot weather, is a
question, but the mass of opinion of
the farmers and others is that the Last
mentioned is the cause.
Word was received here on Tuesday
of the death in London of John Hog-
arth, brother of the late Septimus
Hogarth of Stephen Township, and
unele of Messrs. Wilson, Stephen and
Fred Hogarth of Stephen. Deceas-

took place yesterday to the G. T. R.
station, thence to St. Marys, and was
of a private nature.
The proposed excursion to Kincar-

Sunday school has been called off ow-

The reason given by the 0. T. R. is
that it would conflict with the Bruce
Old Boys arrangement which is being
held in that town.

The Canning Factory was set in op-
eration Tuesday afternoon last, for
the first time, but had only been run-
ning about fifteen minutes when a de-
fective piece of timber in the pea
thresher gave away and caused an ac-
cident which will delay operations till
to -day. It may be said, however, that
the machine while running did excell-
ent work and in the few minutes it
was in operation about ten bushels of
peas were threshed out. it isexpect-
ed to again be in working order this
afternoon (Thursday.)

young couple were unattended. Ow-

The latersatioral Dictionary.
We have just received from the
publishers a copy of Webster's Inter-
national Dictionary, and it may he
said that it is one of the most comp.
lete and extensive works of the kind
on the market to -day. To the prev-
iously published edition there has been
recently rolled 25,09) new words and
phrases making it in many ways far
superior over prior editions and other
works of a similar kind. The arrange-
ment and style is admirably calculated
to simplicity and is indeed through-
out a wonderful composition. It is a
iitlok that should be in the hands of
every student and in every household.
We have made the International the
Standard dictionary of our office and
can most heartily recommend it to
our readers. Persons seeking a work
of this kind would do well to commun-
