P
Exeter's 24th May Celebration! ADDITIONAL LOCAL$
Perhaps the most exceptional thine
about the affair was the particularly
fine weather with which we were fav-
ored. The weather was ideal through-
out the whole day and towns celebrat-
ing consider it lucky that the 24th hap•
petted to drop on Friday, the weather
before and since being anything but
favorable. The fact that the day was
fine, the spring work in the country
over, and the town filled with vis-
itors trade the success of the celebra-
tion very marked. Large crowds were
present from the country and neigh-
boring villages and towns.
At 10 o'clock, shortly after the arriv-
al of the train from London,a monster
procession was formed at the Metropol-
itan Hotel and proceeded south along
Main street and back to the Town Hall.
The procession took the following or-
der: The Directors of Exeter Agricul-
tural Society,under whose auspices the
affair was held, in Mr. Goutley's auto-
mobile; Squire Leathorn, representing
John Bull on a handsome whitecharg-
er, W. R. Elliott and Sam Elliott as
Marshalls, the Town Council in car-
riage, The London Free Press News
Boys Band, which rendered good ser-
vice throughout the day; Volunteers
of No.O Company of the 33rd Battalion
under Sergt.-Major Hector; schcol
children, Exeter Band, Sports Com-
mittee, Bawden's Kazoo Band and a
goodly number of well gotten -up Cali-
thumpians. After returning to the
Town Hall, the soldiers and citizens
were addressed by the chairman of the
spar's committee, N. D. Hnrdon, and
the President of the Agricultural So-
ciety, Mr. Delbridge. It was regretted
by all that the flag from Exeter, Eng.,
did not arrive as it was intended to
have proceeded to the school grounds
and there raise it. This, however,
will take place later.
Many funny things were witnessed
in the antics of the calithumpinns,
who were particularly good, while the
Kazoo Band is a musical organization
of "'igh harder,” having a rare com-
bination of strange and unique instru-
ments. and playing such "clasikal"
music as "The girl I left behind ine."
etc. (Mr. Greenway Manager of the
News Boys Band, has given the Kazoo
Band a special invitation togo to Lon-
don). The Calithuu,pien prizes were
awarded to Dyer Htiidon's outfit rep-
resenting tt Chinese Laundry; Lee
Wilson's hoboes from Sodom; WM.
Frayne's driving outfit, and Fred
White's driving outfit. The National
costume prize was awarded to Hugh
Sellery who represented "Uncle Sam"
and drove a goat. A special prize was
awarded Earl Southcott and Joe Fol -
lick for their teats of dogs and outfit.
AFTERNOON SPORTS
Shortly after one o'clock the bands
and volunteers formed in line on Main
street and starched to the agricultur-
al grounds where the sports were held.
They were followed by an immense
crowd of people anxious to be partici-
pants and spectators. The sports were
conducted in good order and each of
the events was well filled with contes-
tants, and much Mote than the ordi-
inary enthusiasm was shown by the
onlookers as well as by those who took
part. The skirrnish drill by the volun-
teers tinder the command of Sergt-
Major Hector attracted considerable
attention, the manoeuvres being well
perforated. The horse races consisted
of two trots, there hiving four entries
in each. The several heats were well
contested and nearly all were close and
exciting. A slight accident occurred
in one heat when Rus. iledden's cart
was splashed by two of them colliding
when slaking the first turn. Neith-
er driver nor horse was hurt, The
prize for the largest fancily on the
ground was given to Mr. Fronk Trieh-
ncr, his family of twelve being ttil
pi writ t.

As a result of throwing "Kihoot''
on some of the animals in the parade
on May 24th one young man appeared
before the magistrates on Monday and
was fined $4 with coats. This practice,
which has become rather two preval-
ent in town of late, is a dangerous and
cruel one. No one can estimate the
injury that may be done by an animal
made furious by the pain thus caused,
and besides it is cruel to the beast.
A rigorous punishment should be met-
ed out to those who are guilty of the
practice in future.
Mr. Wm. Blair of the North Boun-
dary, Biddulph, came nearly losing
his life on May ?Alb. A friend was
abort to shoot ata cat and had a shot
gun levelled for the purpose when Mr.
Blair happened to turn the corner of
the barn and pass in front of the
gun just as the charge was fired. On
seeing the danger he doged but not in
time to escape altogether, and he re-
ceived several of the scattering shot
in the face. One eye was injured, but
it is not known whether be will lose
the eight of the optic.
