It came with a morning that looked anything Randolph Macdonald, President but favorable, low -hanging clouds and an atmosphere that betokened unfavor- able conditions. Now and then a shower fell hut even this did not retard or A. A. Allan, Vice -President dampen the ardor of the noble sports in attendance. Later in the afternoon the rain conditions subsided and a rather high wind rose which not only uutd D. M. Stewart, General Manager the targets swerve from their natural course lett rendered the marksman un e steady in his aim. Contestants were present from all quarters, but among them were only two professionals. Messrs. F, Conover and P. Ilalford. Datu1 at Fatter, thie :'7th dao of March (:3,7. A Letter From The Old Land. London, Eng., Mar. 16, 1907. To THE ADVOCATE. It is now nearly four months since I left good old Canada and Huron County and arrived ten or twelve days later in this grand old city of London -easily the largest city in the world, containing nearly eight million inhab- itants, and these composed of repre- sentatives of almost all the races and nationalities on earth. Of course the chief and most important geniushotno here is the real "Cockney" and he is also the most important inhabitant in more ways than one. He bears a re- markable hatred of the ever present Yankee and it is reciprocated, but to the ordinary onlooker they seem very Much alike in ways and language. Canadians are to the Cockney "colon- ists," or to some "foreigners' a term which most of us of that stripe resent. You have to go outside of London to see the best sort of Englishmen. I cannot begin to tell you in a short let- ter of all the interesting and wonder- ful sights of this old place. its wealth and its poverty, its wonderful old churches, like St. Pauls and Westmin- litter Abbey and its dens of vice, its Hospitals sotInfirmaries and its plans of amusement such 18 theatres and museums. The British museum would take a month of time alone to get a look at it, but it is chiefly of the Hos- pitals I wish to speak and in fact it is in them that I have spent most of my waking hours since 1 have been here. There are in this city about flfty large hospitals containing front two hundred to one thousand beds each, and all supported entirely by volun- tary contributions. In fart some of them, notably University College Hos- Sttal (which was built and endowed by ir Blundell Maple, M. 1'.) are largely due to the generosity of a tingle per- son. Besides the number of in -patients these hospitals contain and ti eat (and they are nearly always MI) they serve several times as many out-patients e.g. Ontario Liquor License Act License District of South Huron Notice is hereby gisen that the Board of I.icense Committable -4e. for the eiccn•e District of South Iluron mill meet at COMMERCIAL HOTEL, IN THE VILLAGE OF MENSALi. It is indeed a great privilege to be here and in touch with the hest 'nen and medical institutions in the world and i shall he very loath to leave here as I intend to do on the morrow to go to Berlin and later on to Vienna for a short time. 1 ex expect to he in Paris for a day or two at Faster but will spend most of the time between now and my return in Berlin, as this place is ack- nowledged by all nowadays to he the centre of medical education in Ger- many and possibly in Europe. By the way I went down to Hammersmith bridge and saw the University eight - oared boat race between Oxford and Cambridge in which the latter won easily. I never saw such a crowd of people as lined the hank of the Thames and watched the race from every point of vantage. A week Or so ago I visited Brighton the pretty summer resort of London and a few days later went down to Portsmmlth.the "home" of the British navy and saw the "vic- tory" the flagship of Lord Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar. They show the visitor the exact spot where Nel- son fell and died. The big battleships and cruisers and the small "submar- ines" ate a magnificent sight for any one interested in the welfare of this great Empire. So Mr. Editor I will take my leave of you fur the present and may later on write you again from Berlin and if possible from Paris and Vienna and although anxious to get back to Cana - ed I must still pursue my journey and work a little longer, possibly returning in the early summer.
