the licensing requirements.
'those requirements had been in place before the change
in April, but were rarely if ever enforced. Because they were
unenforced, Manny barbers have operated without licenses.
Now, operating without a license costs employer's a $195
fine and employers a $295 fine for first offences.
'I'n get a license, barbers have to learn the in' comhined
curriculum for hairstylists, including perms. colouring and
more.

"'there are 22 compulsory trades that trust pay fees to the
unnecessary College of Trades and this includes barbers and
hairstylists;" says McNaughton. "It used to cost a local barber
about $20 a year to maintain a Certificate of Qualification but
under this new Liberal Plan, they're looking at a 1i M%
increase. 'this infuriates Priest who says this is not good for
this small business or for her customers.
McNaughton said the annual nu'nnhership fee for the lour-
neyperson (:lass is $120 (Plus I ISO'). "1d all trades in Ontario
are forced to join, the Colleges of Trades could collect over
$84 million dollars each year. Both the Liberals and the NDP
support the College of Trades."
„forcing our local barbers to become compulsory mem-
bers of the College of Trades just slakes no sense. Years of
experience will no longer count and instead barbers will

"I have no idea what meat cutters, welders, horse groom-
ers, hot tub installers and barbers have in common, but
they're all linked together under this ridiculous new Liberal
scheme."
McNaughton's office has launched a petition to stop the
jobs killing trades tax and shut down the College of Trades.

The College of Trades, brought in by the Ontario Liberal
