United Way Sarnia-Lambton not involved in wind lawsuit

Executive director Dave Brown wants
supporters of the United Way of Sarnia-
Lambton to know the local campaign
isn't involved in a Florida -based com-
pany's lawsuit against a Middlesex
County anti -wind activist.
NextEra Energy is suing Esther
Wrightman over altered company logos
that were posted online, and the com-
pany has said any damages would be
donated to United Way Canada.
"It doesn't involve the United Way of
Sarnia-Lambton, at all," Brown said.
"It is strictly the United Way of Can-
ada that is named. We didn't ask for any
money, and we're really not involved."
Brown said the United Way of Sarnia-
Lambton won't receive any money from
the lawsuit.
United Way Centraide Canada, the
national organization for United Way
campaigns in Canada, has said it will
accept damages from the lawsuit.
Wrightman is a member of the Mid-
dlesex-Lambton Wind Action Group
that has been fighting wind projects in
the two neighbouring counties.
"We've been getting a lot of phone
calls from concerned people wondering
what our position is," Brown said, "and
(whether) we going to take this money
from this woman or not?"
Brown said he wasn't even aware of
the lawsuit until earlier in the week
when calls began coming into his

Hearing his explanation that the local campaign isn't
involved in the court action, and isn't taking the money,
appears to be satisfying callers' concerns, Brown said.
The local campaign steers clear of political issues, he said.
"Our United Way doesn't do any kind of activism or lobby-
ing, or anything like that. We just try to do the best we can for
local residents."
United Way Sarnia-Lambton pays approximately $16,000 a
year in dues to United Way Centraide Canada, giving the local
campaign access to training, conferences and statistics from
the national organization, as well as use of the United Way
logo.
Brown said some corporations also require that local cam-
paigns belong to United Way Canada to receive donations.
United Way Sarnia-Lambton's current campaign has raised
95% of its $1,870,000 goal, so far, he said.
"We got off to a great start and the momentum carried us
all the way through."
United Way Sarnia-Lambton supports 22 local agencies,
providing 35 programs and services.
