Even though these people, the staff, went to school, got degrees and have years of experience doing what they were hired for --their rec- ommendations, 1n which they were asked to write- are ignored time after time. Why doesn't council just tell staff what they should he writ- ing and stop wasting their valuable time? Or better yet -Why even bother having staff do the report to begin with? Some of the council comments from the reports show that perhaps they are not even being read. At least staff doesn't have to take responsibility if mis- takes and added costs and waste are involved, that part council can he held fully responsible. When this council explained they were going in it different direction after letting the former (:AO go -- this may have been the route they were planning. You do have to won- der though what the destination is. Sands of Time Lynda Hillman-Rapley Editor, Lakeshore Advance . . letters to the editor Back to the future Perhaps you recall when you or your parents waited until after 11 pm or Sun- day to make long distant phone calls . That was the 1960s and frugal families chose to use the Bell telephone system in off hours to pay significantly lower long distance rates. last week the Lib- eral energy minister told us that rates will increase 40 percent on hydro rates in next 3years, telling Ontario to use the " time of use rate system " to be billed for hydro at lower rates, similar to moa bells old program. 1)o your laundry and dishes after dark , thats convenient and progressive in a modern Ontario in 2013 ! This province needs to find a New Energy source to vote this Liberal party out of power because of the failure of an energy policy that keeps rates competi- tive, and Ontario an industry waste land by vastly high power rates, in fact the highest hydro electric rates in North America.w Rob Webb Grand Bend Crosswalks bad idea says reader Crosswalks are it bad idea ('Nen in small towns which don't get tourism, but they're almost certainly a killer in (rand Bend which has thousands of drivers totally new to the main highway which is Ontario Street. Combine that with: rising impaired driving rates; legendary summertime alcohol con- sumption involving young partyers; and big truck traffic during harvest sea- son, and crosswalks reveal themselves for what they are, a bad idea any time and place, and a killer idea in Grand Bend. 'the ONLY way to slake croswalks even reasonably safe is to lower the speed limit through town to 35 kph. Bob Mosurinjohn Grand Bend Four years is much too long; reader I read with interest your editorial about the hest length of office for municipal councils. A one- year tern) is too short. Aside from the obvious cost factor, there is not enough time to actu- ally (10 the jolt without campaigning for the next election at the sant(' time. On the other hand, it four-year tern) is much too long. Municipal councils don't operate in the same way as the provincial and federal systems (10, nor do they deal with the same kinds of issues. An ineffective council can para- lyze a municipality's ability to keep up with our fast moving society trends. 1 realize that it is too late to change the rules for the 2014 elections, but I would suggest that grass roots organiza- tions in all parts of the province should make plans to petition the province to reduce the term in time for the follow- ing o111'.
