Versteeg or Steffler for Warden?
Competition is
good for democracy
Paul Cluff
OMI Agency
Joe Steffler has a checklist
tucked away and the former
Huron County employee and
current member Of county coun-
cil has one more box to tick.
The Huron East councillor was
set to find out Wed. Dec. 4 if he
is the new Warden, replacing
George Robertson, whose one-
year term has come to an end.
"Before I retired from the
county (after 35 years), 1 put it
on my bucket list," the Seaforth
resident said on a break from a
county council meeting Nov. 27.
Steffler was elected to munici-
pal council in 2003 and three
years on began representing his
tower tier at the county level.
Steffler often references think-
ing outside of the box. Ile
doesn't shy away from boasting
of the county he lives in and
wants to move it forward, partic-
ularly with post -secondary
education.
"We have to have (it) in Huron
to keep our young people work-
ing here.
1 think we are sitting on a
goldmine and all we have to do
is open it."
Opposing Steffler is liowick
Reeve Art Versteeg.
After announcing he was run-
ning earlier this year, the Gorrie
farmer said council moved
through difficult struggles over
the last few years, noting senior
management turnover and the
tornado that bit Goderich
and area.
"Moving forward we still have
the EMS review to take care of, a
facilities review, and we just
passed this morning a review of
our archives. These are prtictical
things related to running our
county that we have to deal with.
As a council, that is where most
of our time and energy will be
taken up with."
Both councillors praised the
job of Robertson, the retired cop
from Exeter who kept order at
county meetings.
"Ile has done a great job for
us," Versteeg said. 'Ile kept
council on track and made sure
we completed the business stuff

with him."
Added Steffler: "Warden Robertson
has done a great job. We have made
great strides in the county and we
have to (continue to) move ahead. I
hope to carry on where George
left off."
Steffler said he has no idea who is

not a walk-in for anyone. I have great
respect for Joe. If he wins, that's great,

But i would like to get the job."
