Kiwanis planning Lambton Film and Food Festival
The Kiwanis Club of Forest
is putting its experience run-
ning the Kineto Theatre to use
in spearheading the Lambton
Film and Food Festival.
Club member Glen Starkey
said the new three-day festi-
val, from May 23-25, will com-
bine the screening of a series
of films at the Kineto 'Theatre
in Forest, with opportunities
to sample local food from
Lambton County farms and
restaurants.
Details are still being worked
out but Starkey said they
expect to show three films
daily during the festival, run-
ning Friday to Sunday.
"'Phis would be something a
little different," Starkey said
about the movie lineup.
Organizers are working with
the Toronto International Film
Festival to select titles
expected to include independ-
ent and art films, much like
those shown by cineSarnia,
he said.
'1'he service club already
offers a subscription series, in
association with the Forest-
Lambton Museum, that
screens films that haven't been
widely distributed.
I'he 225 -seat Kineto Theatre
dates back to 1917. It was pur-
chased and revived by the
service club in 1977,
Just recently, the Kiwanis
Club raised about $150,000 to
convert the Kineto to digital
projection equipment so it
could continue showing first -
run movies several evenings
a week.
The food side of the three-
day festival is an effort to high-
light locally grown wares, Star-
key said.
It niay take the form of' area
restaurants offering special
local menu items that week-
end, or a gala where a variety
of local food can be sampled
at a single location, he said.
"We have a lot of great food
produced in Lambton County,"
he said. "Let's profile it and
share it with a broader
audience."
A festival website is expected
to he up and operating in Jan-
uary, Starkey said.

A new business centre scheduled to
open at Kettle and Stony Point First
Nation in the new year is expected to
promote entrepreneurship in the
Lambton County community.
Ontario's Ministry of Aboriginal
Affairs said Wednesday the province'
will contribute $501,500 to the $581,700,
3,600 -square -foot centre already under
construction.
"'The Chippewas of Kettle and Stony
Point first Nation appreciate the fact
that Ontario is working toward strength-
ening relationships with First Nation
communities and endorse their efforts,"
said Chief Thomas llressette.
The project, located across the road
from an existing plaza owned by the
First Nation near 1 lighway 21, is approx-
imately 4096 completed, said Phyllis
George, administrator with the first
Nation's development corporation
Southwlnd.
"It should be completed, hopefully,
by the end of January," she said.
"We're pretty excited about our new
business centre and look forward to the
future."
The centre will have three retail
spaces, and will include a gas station. It
is expected to enhance business devel-
opment opportunities for First Nation
entrepreneurs, according to the
ministry.
George said the corporation is in the
process of looking into leasing out the
centre's retail space.
"'There has been interest," she added.
The existing plaza at the entrance
the First Nation was built 20 years agi
"Our First Nation is committed to
building a sustainable economy for the
benefit of the community, our Mein -
hers and visitors to our beautiful area;"
George said.
Provincial funding for the new busi
Hess centre conies from Ontario's Aho
riginal Community Capital Grants pro
grain, designed to support First Nation
groups in building or improving con)
munity centres and small business ten
tres across the province.
It has provided more than $30.7 mil
lion to aboriginal communities since
2001
"We will continue to work with First
Nations and Aboriginal organizations
to move forward on important capital
projects that help build stronger, more
vibrant communities," said Aboriginal
Affairs Minister David Zimmer.
