NI Agency:
Grand Bend is finding out that
you can never have enough public
signs. Especially when it comes to
the community's iconic beach.
A report from the Grand Bend
and Area Chamber of Commerce
suggests that although parking
remains a 'major challenge during
the summer months, the vacation
community also needs to do a bet-
ter job in explaining where its attrac-
tions are - and, incredibly enough,
that includes signs pointing to the
beach.
"Despite being the reason for
Grand Bend's existence, a
way to the beach
surprising number of area visitors
don't know where the Main Beach
Is, says the report, which was pre-
sented to Lambton Shores munici-
pal council earlier this month.
Turns out that more than a few
visitors to Grand Bend who need to
be directed to the beach. They also
don't know the location of that com-
munity's marina, and they'd like to
attend other attractions, but need to
be told where.
Don't laugh. Take a trip to Nia-
gara Falls, and you'll find that the
Niagara Parks Commission makes
sure its visitors know exactly where
the falls are located. Even if you're
within roaring distance of that
natural wonder and if your car is
covered with the falls' mist, the
Commission makes sure there's
plenty of signage available to ensure

"Alcohol impairs judgment, lowers inhi-
bition, decreases reaction time and nega-
tively affects decision-making. Impair-
ment begins with the first sip of alcohol."
While most harmful effects of alcohol
come from drinking too much, "how
much is too much" varies from person-
to-person. The Rethink Your Drinking
campaign (www.rethinkyourdrinking.ca)
encourages a culture of moderation,
offers information about the short and
long-term risks of injury or harm associ-
ated with alcohol consumption and pro-
motes Canada's Low -Risk Alcohol Drink-
ing Guidelines.
"The goal of Rethink Your Drinking is
not to make men or women stop drinking
alcohol but to encourage healthy, well-
informed choices about alcohol use,"
added Easterby. "Those who choose to
drink alcohol should know how much
alcohol is in a standard drink, how 'much
they are drinking, and to pace their con-
sumption by spacing or slowing

physical and mental changes that can put
alcohol users and others at risk of injury
or death. Consequences may include
falls, alcohol poisoning, violence, car
crash, and unwanted or unprotected sex.
"It's no secret alcohol consumption
can cause major health problems, or inju-
ries in a car crash, but we need to think
about other possible harms. Drinking
alcohol affects the body In many ways,
and our drinking may impact the health
of our relationships with others:"
According to the Centre for Addiction
and Mental I lealth (CAMI 1), alcohol con-
sumption is linked to more than 200 dif-
ferent diseases and injuries including
liver cirrhosis and several types of cancer,
such as female breast cancer.
Lambton Public health is a partner in
the Rethink Your Drinking campaign that
generates awareness of alcohol, and why
awareness 'natters:
• size of the drink
■ alcohol's link to chronic disease
■ how alcohol affects genders differently
• choices made when drinking
