Christmas Bureau helping everyone in
the community celebrate the season
i)e'ar Editor,
Since 1967, the Huron County Christmas
Bureau, a volunteer organization, sup-
ported by the Huron -Perth Children's' Aid
Society, has devoted many hours each year
to ensure that no child is forgotten at
Christmas time. last year, over 1,000 chil-
dren, from newborn to age 18, benefited
from your generosity.
The Christmas Bureau is a countywide
volunteer group that organizes five gift cen-
tres (bureaus) that distribute new toys,
clothing, and food cards to families in our
county who need a hand.
As a new resident to 1 luron County 10
years ago, 1 was invited to co-chair the
Clinton Bureau at St. Joseph's Church.
What a welcoming experience.
It was and is a wonderful opportunity to
contribute to our community. Children are
our future and Christmas Bureau is one
way of embracing our youth.
l low can you help?
One way is to volunteer at your local
bureau. Last year over 400 volunteers were
involved donating over 5,000 hours of
time. You can also remember the Christ-
mas Bureau children when planning your
family, friends, and office Christmas party
by shopping for a child or youth. Financial
gifts are always required and if donating
new gifts (clothing, toys, or recreational
items) or teen gift cards, please do so dur-
ing collection week Dec. 2-6, as this helps
the bureaus address the needs of the regis-
tered families. Posters and signs will be
placed throughout the communities as a
reminder to contribute. This year, the
bureau has decided to phase out food
boxes mainly because of the safety/
mechanics of collection and distributing.
To compensate, the food card value clients
receive has increased.
if you are a custodial parent, and live in
Huron County and you need some assist-
ance, the Christmas Bureau phones open
for registering Nov 18 through Dec. 6,
Monday to Friday. You will be given an
appointment during the week of Dec.9-13.
Confidentiality is our priority. Call Christ-
mas Central at 519-524-7336 ext.3271 or

Trying to make Lambton Shores a happening place
Re: Going into Year Four from Eric Shafer
Dear Editor,
1 wish to take this opportunity to con-
gratulate Eric Shafer on his excellent Letter
to the Editor printed in the Lakeshore
Advance on November 13, 2013.
He has very accurately articulated the
happenings by Lambton Shores Council
during their recent tenure.
Our Mayor, Bill Weber, has shown
incredible restraint and great leadership
skills in attempting to keep our Municipal-
ity afloat.
'ihe attempt by some members of Coun-
cil to promote their personal agendas to
the detriment of the good of all Lambton
Shores cannot go unnoticed by the elector-
ate in the next election.
We must look for persons who support
the growth of our community. Me status
quo is not acceptable.
Development and a vibrant Official Plan
will make Lambton Shores a happening
place not just a dot on the map.
The partisan interests of a small group of
vocal, well -organized residents are dictat-
ing the future for all of larnbton Shores. We
need to be aware of this group and their
objectives before we, as a community, are
subjected to another term of wasted
diarrhea at meetings in which very little is
accomplished.
'lie great works by the Grand Bend
Chamber of Commerce is reflective of
community groups in all of Lambton
Shores who need the support of this Coun-
cil to sell the area to develop a vibrant com-
munity but are stonewalled by this
Council.
This Municipality is blessed with a very
competent staff whose expertise is second
to none. 'Their expertise is constantly not
listened to by some Council members who
believe they have all the answers.
Let us hope the taxpayers in Lambton
Shores read and act on Eric Shafer's
editorial
Respectfully submitted

Questions to Northland
Power from reader
Dear Editor,
I was interested in Roy Merkley's open letter
to Gord Potts of Northland Power. Perhaps Mr.
Merkley had to resort to this approach because
he was as unsuccessful as was 1 in getting a
direct answer from Mr. Potts. I have three main
questions:
1. Why are we in such a hurry to adopt
wind turbines when we really do not know the
effect they have on proximate humans, birds
and wildlife?
Unless I have been misinformed we are
presently selling surplus power to the U.S.
2. Wind turbines are, unquestionably, the
most expensive and intrusive form of renewa-
ble energy. Should they not be a last resort?
3. Property values near wind farms can
decrease by as much as 50%. If we must have
them, why are they not positioned in the least
visible areas as far away from houses as
possible?
We in rural areas are labeled with the
NiMBY tag for expressing such concerns. l
have a great idea. Why not put wind turbines
on top of all of the tall buildings in Toronto and
IIamilton? This would save us all the cost of
the towers.

Thanks for shopping early
Dear Editor,
On behalf of all our participating retailers,
restaurants and accommodation providers, I'd
like to thank everyone for another successful
Christmas Comes Early Event. This year's
event was expanded to include our good
neighbour businesses in Forest, and a second
day of horse drawn carriage rides. Shoppers
enjoyed treats and bargains in the shops, deli-
cious meals in the restaurants, and much
needed rest at our accommodation providers
after a long day of shopping!
It was inspiring to see locals and visitors
alike snit in numbers to support our local busi-
nesses. We appreciate it!!
