Bat Doc says, 'Get a flu shot'
Lynda HIllman-Rapley
Lakeshore Advance
Story: lie is Bat Doc • or rather l)r. Ken Milne
and his message is loud and clear as he challenges
everyone to get the flu shot.
"The video I'm Bat Doc was inspired by Chris-
tian Bale's performance in the Batman movies and
the You'l'tbe video called Bat Dad by Blake Wil-
son," says I)r. Milne.
"South Huron 1 lospital is known as The Little
l lospital that Does. As part of our Choose Wisely
initiative we decided to be the little hospital that
does...flu shots. We made it mandatory for all
medical staff to receive the vaccination. As part of
the education campaign, a You'I'ube video was
posted discussing flu shot myths. While highly
successful it was rather long at 30 minutes."
To promote flu shots for the 2013-14 season they
created this 3min video called I'm Bat Doc. It dis-
cusses some of the myths surrounding the flu shot
and encourages people to get immunized.
As he uses his super powers as Bat Doc he
dispels rumours about the shot hurting or not
working or their children are too young. Ile is
blunt and gets the message otit there.
111111' of health-care workers in Ontario hospitals
and one in four in nursing homes last year skipped
the tlu shot. Their choices lead to illness and death
especially among young kids, seniors and those
with compromised immune systems.
The low vaccination rates among health care
workers hasn't escaped the notice of Ontario's
Chief Medical Officer of I lealth, I)r. Arlene King.
"Like everyone else, health-care workers are sus-
ceptible to misinformation about influenza," she
said.
King's office is in the second -year of a three-year
education blitz for health -rare workers, but if that
doesn't work, she'll consider making a flu shot a
requirement for a health-care workers to get and
keep a Job.
