The Inaugural 5K Run4Kids in Bayfield raised $12,924.65. Funds will go towards Childcan and the new Online Learning Bursaries
program at Virtual High School.

'Ilio Virtual High School have partnered with (:hildcan to
(deliver it new program that provides Online Learning Bursa-
ries for kids coping with cancer. '11 ' inaugural 5K Run4Kids
in Layfield saw 157 runners participate. the race ambassador
was Will Frassin'lli, a 12 -year old brain tumour survivor.
Collectively, $12,92,1,65 %vas raised for (;hildcan and the
new Online Learning Bursaries I'rograln. VI IS covered all
('(Sts tot the ('Vent so that 1(10"i, of the proceeds are donated
to (:hildcan and the online learning program. The bursary
fund will cover teacher payments for each course registration
and VI IS will cover all administrative costs associated with
the course.
Ibis new partnership offers a solution that enables senior
elementary students and high school students to continue
their education that is available at any time and ill any plil('('
and at their own pace. Having an opportunity to learn at your

"When kids have to he away from school for lengthy peri-
ods of time for life saving treatments this changes the dynam-
ics with their peer groups. One thing kids want to do is to just
be 'normal again' when they return to school; but many will
face challenges from effects of treatment not to mention
many months of lost time, while their friends move forward,"
said Marianne I lehb, executive director of (;hildcan.
Added Stephen Laker, principal of Virtual I1igh School:
"Life is tough t'Ve'll under normal circumstances. 1O laver
cancer on top of a child's life and have it interfere with the
normal (developmental processes all kids go through would
he particularly (devastating. VI IS does education differently.
Our flexible approach to education will allow the type of
access to education that kids coping with cancer need. VI IS is
extremely pleased to contribute Our expertise and adminis-
trative services to help these kids."
Over 10,000 children in Canada are presently receiving
cancer care across this country; 4,000 of them are in Ontario,
and 1,700 new cases will he diagnosed in Canada this year.
Virtual I ligh School is a private online high school that has
been issuing ()SSI) credits since 2002. VI IS is recognized and
inspected by the Ministry of Lducation.'1he school also offers
it selection of elementary school courses through Virtual Ele-
mentary School. Teachers at VI IS are numbers of the Ontario
College of leachers (O(: I') and provide feedback and support
to students as they progress through their courses.
