GDCI edges South Huron in WOSSAA final

GOD1iRIC11- Ray Lewis was taking a wait-and-see approach
to the GDCI Vikings field hockey season a year after a remarka-
ble run that included a WOSSAA title and bronze medal at the
OFSAA Championships in 2012.
I lis young team had another idea.
Jessica I lastie, who scored the Winner against Exeter South
Iluron Panthers in the Huron -Perth final on Monday, did it
again for the Vikings on Thursday, scoring twice in a 2-1 win
over the Panthers in the WOSSAA final.
"1 didn't even expect I luron-Perth this year," said Lewis, who
had just four senior players back. "I thought it was a building
year,"
But after some strong performances at the St. John's Kilmar-
nock lbumament, which annually features the best high school
field hockey teams in the province, the coach started to believe
his team was onto something.
Goderich won 11 times in the 1 luron-Perth Athletics regular
season - only a tie against South Huron prevented them running
the table.
I lastie scored twice in the 3-0 morning semifinal win over
Medway Cowboys, including one on a rare penalty shot after the
Cowboys' goaltender covered the hall. Normally occupying the
centre of the field, I lastie was positioned on the left side against
the Panthers and they had no answer for her.
"She had a career week," Lewis said.
Haley Baker scored the Vikings other goal.
Emmy my Gozzard earned the shutout.
In the final, South I iuron controlled the run of play towards
the end of the first half but it was 1-1 at the break. "We knew it
would be tight, we were dead even with them all season. I
thought they turned the tide before the half, outplaying us in the
short game. Half time came at the right time."
Cold and wet conditions only got worse as the second half
wore on. Shortly after Hastie scored the go-ahead goal following
a short comer, the rain picked up and was unrelenting until the
final whistle.
Goderich moves on to the provil)cial championship.
It will be hosted by Kitchener Resurrection, who beat the
Vikings in last year's OFSAA semifinals before winning the title.
As a returning medalist, Lewis said the team could be ranked
inside the top five, a thought that would not have crossed his
mind a few months ago.
