adventure to life
Freel's tale sat in a
drawer but is now
available on Kindle

Tom Freel used to take his children to
Fincher's in Goderich to buy books when
the family stayed at their Bluewater Beach
cottage.
Around that time, Freel put pen to paper
n a book idea that had long been in the
back of his mind.
The idea came while he was lying in bed
one night. Ile had always been fascinated
with islands but wasn't much of a
bookworm. Ile preferred movies because
he found most books didn't have enough
action.
Escape from "Nonan" Island, "has the
action," the author says.
Anthropologist Bill Johnson and his son,
Rick, are flying south to join Rick's mother
and sister in Mexico. But a terrible storm
throws the plane and its passengers for a
loop. With controls out of order after a light-
ning strike, they are forced to land on a
small, mysterious island, way off course.
From there, the adventure begins.
Busy with a career and family
commitments, Freel put what he had written
in a drawer for decades. He finally got
around to printing and promoting his book
and it' s now available at Pincher's in
Goderich and at Huron County libraries. He
wrote a prequel but that is stored on a floppy
disk and will have to be transferred to a
modern storage system.
This past year, Freel, now retired and
living in Grand Bend, bought a laptop and
a Kindle, two devices every modern-day
author can't live without.
"I published it on Kindle as an Pbook
and on Amazon.ca."
Which means the 106 -page book is
available in a 56 -page format for $1 on Kin-
dle. Initially it was free, and Preel was Jubi-
lant that his book was downloaded 115
times. Only one person, in Germany,
bought it when the price kicked in. But he's
not in it for the money.
Everything in the book is possible. In the
author's mind, there are two tribes, likely
Aztec and Polynesian.
Preel notes that while there may have
once been a possibility of the islands exist-
ing, today's satellite technology can prove
otherwise.
Much has happened since the book was
written, but the messages are timeless. "It's
a good book for boys who haven't shown
that much interest in reading."
