Kathleen Williams for Women's Probus
Grand Rend Women's Probus opened
their Oct. sleeting with Darlene Garter's
"Slice of life" a historical outline of her
family roots to the Grand Bend area. She
recalled her connections hack ten genera-
tions, one hundred sixty-one years, when
her great grandfather arrived in Canada
from England. Darlene has been able to
research through photos and journals of
past relatives. A very informative account
was presented of her family's early settling
in the area.
Jim Southcott, an active community mem-
ber, gave a talk regarding the Grand Rend
area. He informed us of the Canada Com-
pany acquiring the large tract of land from
the British Company which was sold to colo-
nize the area. This land sale stipulated that
there mist be a dam and sawmill developed,
which in 1932 became Brewster's Mill.
Ry 185:; Jim's relatives, William and Mary
Southcott arrived from Devonshire, Eng-
land to locate in Exeter. 'they had two sons,
Charles and John, as well as a daughter
Emma, who purchased 250 acres from John
Dalziel in 1879, which became the South -
cott property. The son, John Southcott, was
Jim's great grandfather.
After the War in 1946, clear title was estab-
lished to this land and later in 1973, Jim and
his three brothers, Jack, Bob and Robert,
went to'l'oronto and got a development con-
cept plan which was brought back and
approved by the Municipality. Lots were sold
with the expectation that trees and fauna

To the Editor;
What's wrong with this picture? We have
the Ontario and federal governments and
their so-called leaders running our country
into the ground with all their poor decisions
and all the scandals taking place on behalf of
the governments. There is nothing we can
do as taxpayers? •
Wrong!
Get off the couch and make your concerns
known. What the government is doing is
criminal. 'Ihl them we want the leaders and
and share your views
their governments accountable for their
actions and decisions. We need them to be
accountable to the taxpayers who pay their
salaries. 'they work for us...we don't work for
them! We hired them with our votes! We
want accountability! We need accountabil-
ity! We deserve accountability! If you agree,
stand up and say so! E-mail, write or call
your MP and MPP expressing your views. It
all starts with one voice.

would be preserved. Jim proudly expressed that
seven generations are involved in the Southcott
property that remains today.
Lynda Hillman- Rapley followed Jim's pres-
entation with information relating to the 1900's.
She recalled the history of many of the present
day Grand Bend. buildings. Mention was made
of the purchase of the property behind the
Oakwood in 1917 by CW Walker. Reference was
made to the Casino on the lakefront opened in
1919. The Casino brought many well known
famous musicians to entertain in Grand Bend
and unfortunately burnt down along with a
couple other establishments in the town
between 1981 and 82.
Grand Bend was incorporated in 1951 and at
that time there was a Temperance Act which
created a division down the center of the to%
with Lanlbton being "wet" and l luron, "dr.
Other important dates noted were the acquiring
of the Pinery Provincial Park in 1957 and the
Civil Riot in 1964.
Jim and Lynda noted that historical informa-
tion and a pamphlet that gives a walking tour
of Grand Bend are available at the Chamber of
Commerce.
