Her energy radiated through the crowd at the Victoria Play- house in Petrolia Tuesday dur- ing her Canadian premiere. "I'm here to tell Petrolia I'm very much alive," she said to an almost sold -out crowd. Henderson, now 79, told dirty jokes, including one about Viagra commercials that really got the old men howling. "I'm kind of naughty so get used to it:' she said. But all laughs aside, Hend- erson told the audience that the night was all about telling the truth about her life. "'frust ine at my age, you really don't need any more B.S.;" she said with a laugh. Throughout the 90 -minute show, she retraces the many roles she has played In her life: a daughter, a TV mom, a real- life mother, and a wife. The show started off with a short video that reminded the audience of her many per- formances on Broadway and on TV. It showcased her roles in Oklahoma!, Fanny, The Song of Norway, The Dean Martin Show, The Girl Who Came to Supper, and even poked fun at her many com- mercials for Polident denture cleanser. She then spoke of her life as the youngest of ten chil- dren growing up in a poor sharecroppers family in Indi- ana. Henderson said she would go to the market and sing for groceries. When llenderson was grad- uating high school she didn't have the money to go to col- lege. It was the parents of one of her best friends who came to watch her sing and decided to give her the money to pur- sue her dreams. At 17, Henderson entered New York's American ATTENTION READERS Take advantage of our pricing for HAPPY NOTES includes: Birthdays, Anniversaries Weddings, Engagements, Graduations etc. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MI 1 (Name Person) (Date) Love Mom & Dad 1 Only $18.00 Phis H.S.T. Throughout the perform- ance, Henderson alternates from telling brief stories of her life to singing snippets from songs that she's performed along the way. She also creates some new songs and throws in some oth- ers that give meaning to her life. She was joined on stage by musical director and pianist Glen Hoven along with two background singers and two musicians. After intermission, i lender - son read off some questions that audience members sub- mitted and answered each one with honesty and wit. Following the question period, llenderson asked the crowd to sing -a -long as she belted out the famous theme song to'Ihe Brady Bunch. She said that no matter how many interviews she does or where she goes, she always gets asked about her role as one of TV's most beloved moms. The Brady Bunch, that first aired in 1969 is currently broadcast in 122 countries across the world and has never been off air. "You can't kill it with a stick" she joked. Henderson did say she enjoyed her role as Carol Brady, but stressed that being a mom in real-life is what she treasures most. "No matter how old they get, they'll always be my babies;" she said. llenderson had four chil- dren with Ira Bernstein before they divorced in 1985 after almost 29 years of marriage. I lenderson met and married John Kappas shortly afterward. In 2002, her husband of 18 years was dialniosed with ter- minal cancer. Something that I lenderson says was one of the most diffi- cult things she ever had to deal with. "I can hear hitu say 'come on Florence keep going, stay positive, move forward' and I've really tried to do that." I ler positivity, humour and energy on stage is truly contagious. There's no doubt that at 79 years young I lenderson is a force to be reckoned with.
