Officials with the Ministry of Com- munity Safety and Correctional Serv- ices and the Ontario Provincial Police are expected to consult with the major- ity of communities using OPP services by the end of November. "'There will be opportunities for all the communities we police to partici- pate in these engagement sessions," said OPP Staff Sgt. Cathy Bell, of the municipal policing bureau. Communities across Ontario have been calling for greater control over how they're billed for OPP services in light of escalating costs. On Jan. 1, 2014, OPP officers will see a 8.5% pay hike, potentially adding millions of dollars to municipal budgets. Bell said the new billing model is expected to usher in transparency. "It's intended to provide cost recov- ery that will he more fair across the board," she said. In the meantime, the OPP will be deferring all municipal police contract renewal discussions until the new kill- ing model has been hammered out, . It's intended to provide cost recovery that will be more fair across the board." (JPP Staff Sgt. Cathy Bell Municipalities whose OPP contracts are set to expire before Jan. 1, 2015 have two options. 'they can amend their cur- rent contract to continue until the new billing model is ready or they can let their contract expire and be policed by the OPP on a non -contract basis. Both Lambton County and the Vil- lage of Point Edward have OPP con- tracts set to expire next year. County warden Todd Case said the nine rural municipalities who are part of the Lambton contract currently enjoy a "fairly decent" rate from the OPP. "From our standpoint, none of the details have been released through this process the OPP has gone through, so we look forward to seeing obviously what comes out of their consultations and how it's going to affect us long term whether it's more expensive or less," he said. Point Edward Mayor Dick Kirklant was also supportive of the current cost 'for local OPP services. "We're happy with the policing costs for the village right now," he said. however, the village has sent out a survey to all residents asking for their level of satisfaction with local policing. The results of the survey will be for- warded for discussion to the Point Edward Police Services Board and vil- lage council. Once community consultation is fin- ished on the proposed new billing model, Bell said it will be up to the Min- istry of Community Safety and Correc- tional Services to decide whether to implement it. barbara.simpson@sunmedia.ca No tanning beds for under 18 Canadian Cancer Society volunteers and staff are celebrating the passing of legislation that will prohibit youth under 18 from accessing tanning beds in Ontario. Bill 30 underwent third reading yes- terday and was passed as the Skin Can- cer Prevention Act in the Ontario Legis- lature today. "I'm happy that we finally have legis- lation that will protect youth from skin cancer," says Kate Neale, 23, a melanoma cancer survivor and Society volunteer. The Belleville native worked at a tanning salon and used indoor tan- ning extensively as a young teen. Kate was in the Legislature today to watch history in the making. "When 1 was diagnosed with melanoma, 1 wanted to stop every young person from indoor tanning. 1 joined the Canadian Cancer Society and the #tanbedban movement to advocate for legislation banning indoor tanning for youth because it was my hope to make a difference. 'That hope has become reality;" Neale says. The Society has been placing the issue of indoor tanning and youth on the political agenda since 2005. That year, Society volunteers met with MPPs at Queen's Park to inform therm about the dangers associated with indoor tan- ning, particularly for youth, and to push for provincial indoor tanning legislation in Ontario. Since then, volunteers have been back at Queen's Park, met with MPPs, participated in numerous letter - writing campaigns as well as made dep- utations at municipal council meetings, successfully helping to pass three indoor tanning bylaws across the province.
