I lowever, I still love the place and visit it often. But - although there must he about a half dozen "available" washrooms, the powers that be failed horribly to properly attend to the fundamental needs of its thousands of visi tors, who spread the word of their visit for miles and miles around, and possible suggest, "take your own toile't." 1 ant referring to the Armstrong East perspective Dear 1:71ltor, Thank you for your recent coverage in Local News of an issue that may seem trivial to many readers but that we, in Armstrong East, have been struggling to resolve for the past two dee ad('s.'lhe subject of vehicles k one that few other l..unbton Shores residents would think twice about. In our day -to day lives, we simply take for granted the ability to drive wherever white or necessity moves us, And if we were asked to give up this convenience, we'd resist. In fact, we'd scream bloody murder. So who in their right rmin(i would want to walk, lugging groceries and supplies, children and pets in tow, through blistering heat or pouring rain, when driving is such an easy and obvious alternative? 1 can think of more than forty cottagers and their families who have made just such a choice in Armstrong Park Bast. washrooms at the harbour building, the wash- rooms at Either Street and the washrooms at the beach. My visit to (rand Bend was mid September. One such washroom (when it is open for use?) is kept accessible by a wedge of wood holding the door ajar, which, it is hoped, no careless or prankish foot has kicked aside, preventing ones fevered and tiring route starch not have been in vain. Another "open to the public'?" but not open, washroom door, directed me 10 a door further down the walk, where a crowd was standing, both men and women, waiting their turn at the his and her door, which stood ajar, with no lock nor ability to close. Anxiously returning, a short time later, I was finally able to enter the hygienically offensive, Armstrong East, while attached to the rest of Port Franks by the shoreline, is an "island" unto itself. Bordered on three sides by Lake 1 Iuron .uu1 the Ausable River and by the Pin - ery Provincial Park on the fourth, the commu- nity is inaccessible by vehicles. We can't get here by car; everything must first cross open water. 'This simple fact sets Armstrong East apart from most communities in Ontario and, as such, it appeals to a different kind of resident - with if different kind of perspective. In a letter addressed to Council, and on behalf of the majority of Armstrong East residents, I attempted to share this perspective with our neighbours who are in favour of driving and the Committee that was !Mined to consider the issues surrounding vehicular use in Arm- strong East. It's interesting to note that for three STF addendum bump up requests Dear Editor, The Ministry of the Environment recently released copies of the signed Part 11 (order let- ters requesting a blimp up regarding the Envi- mnmental Assessment -- Sanitary Treatment Facility (SIT) addendum. 1 am pleased to see that many of those who sent the requests are good members of this community. it was g(xxl that they exercised their democratic right to file the objections. On the flip side of the matter, the information thus(' good people received was very flawed (inaccurate). Someone, circulated information that the amended SIT would Ix' t(x) small and not up to the required tasks. 'the chart that the Ministry circulated to all the writers of the bump up requests clearly shows that the now approved SIPP is flexible, efficient and clearly capable of achieving the tasks that will be assigned to it. 'Ibis effort by the LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Lakeshore Advance welcomes letters to the editor. betters must Include the writer's Ministry certainly refutes the efforts of thou' who would discredit the amended S I'E "lis chart is on the municipal web site for thou' who wish to views it. 'This would is a great opportunity for the Mayor to unite this community once again, after a very divisive period of time.'Ihis is the time for healing. 'There, while attending to what should have been a private visit, a woman, embarrassingly and innocently barged into my presence in this repulsively inadequate excuse for a healthy sanitary unit, also embar- rassing yours turly. Disgusting? 'That is hardly the word for it. Realizing the thousands and thousands of dollars spent must have depleted your reserves for such a paltry thing as a wash - roonm, i would like to contribute, if only in promise, the beginning of a collection for a better than cave snot pit stop! 'Thank you for your indulgence. A. Griffiths St. Mary's Ontario generations, the community was extremely close. In such an isolated environment, we carte to depend on one another for help with even day-to-day chores. 11 was a healthy, sup- portive community in the true sense of the word. Not surprisingly then... of the six cottag • ers who wish to drive, four are relative new comers to the island. It is they who are pro- moting regular vehicular use across 1.anthton Shores, finery and Ali(;A protected lands. Jnfortunately, they're prepared to say or do just about anything to get their way, much to the dismay and disquiet of their neighbours.
