1)aye, a young than with
Down syndrome, had never
moved so quickly outside a
motorized vehicle. And
!larding, a runner who (las
completed two Boston Mar-
athons and Ironrnan compe-
titions, had never before
shared his racing experience
with someone else.
Both were all smiles as
!larding pushed Dayr in a
specialized running chair
across the makeshift finish
line of their practice run.
„Faster, Wes! Easter!
Faster!" yelled Dayr, and
then, "I want to do it again!"
Luckily, he'll get that
chance when they compete
at finery Provincial ('ark
later this month, where the
pair will be among the
handful of participants the
first-ever my 'learn Tri
unlph race in Canada.
1\t'l1' is an organisation
that acts as a ride along
program, allowing those
with disabilities (captains)
to experience the thrill of a
race with the help of able-
bodied runlets (angels).
As !larding (an angel)
explained to MINT (a cap-
tain), "You're going to he
the heart and I'm going to
he the fret:'
the group was founded
in the United States, and
after participating in an
event last year in Grand
Rapids, !larding, who has
received intention this year
for the release of his hook

couch potato to an Ironman, fell in
love with the idea.
"I can't think of a greater rause
than this," he said, adding that it
reminded him of the father -son team
Dick and Rick Ilovt, who are known
worldwide for participating in races
while Dick pushes Rick.
"'They've got it right they're doing
it together.,"
But !larding put the concept "on
the back burner" while he tackled
other goals of his. That changed in
April when, minutes after the teacher
finished his Roston Marathon, he
looked back down the road and saw
the destruction left behind by a
bombing.
"1 just thought, 'Life is short.' It
motivated Ole to bring it to Canada."
In May, he \VitS n1ttned the hv.td of
the Sarnia chapter of My 'Team 'Tri-
umph, and lie's been approached
about being (.EO of the eventual
Canadian network of groups.
Over the summer, !larding put
together a hoard of directors now
comprised of 10 people from Sarnia,
Arkona, Forest, and 'Medford and
the group is in the process of apply-
ing for charitable status through Rev-
enue Canada.
(1owever, t 1T1' Sarnia has already
received seven sizeable donations -
all of theta specialized chairs, which
can have a price tag of up to $1,500,
to accommodate captains in races.
Earlier this tveek, 1 larding got a trailer
to haul the geld' around, and eventu-
ally, the group will purchase equip-
ment for swimming and bicycling to
allow captains to participate in tria-
thlons. Donations will also go toward
covering race entrance fees.

"'there's a lot of cost," said I larding.
So far, the organisation has received
nearly 20 applications from runners
and walkers looking to act as angels,
and it expects to get 1111 "avalanche„
of more support after it has a race and
people see what the participants are
(going.
The group has entered participants
int() a race Oct. 20 three months
before !larding originally hoped 0)
start and Dec. 5 this year. The hoard
expects to enter six events annually
starting in '201,1, including the Blue -
water 'Triathlon.
"My dream would be to eventually
do a marathon;' he said.
But, like everything, a dream has to
start somewhere and his will begin
with the Pinery race later this month.
"On that starting line, that's just
going to be a picture perfect moment,"
he said.
"I've had a lot of races, but this is
going to be my highlight."
The wheelchair division partici-
pants will get a five-minute head
start. } larding hopes that advantage,
combined with his sub -20 minute
pact' without a captain, will help keep
trim and Cody - as well as the other
angel who will he running with them
-- in the front of the race until the fin-
ish line.
And does Cody think he'll have
what it take's t(1 place first?
"Yes 1 \vitt - no doubt there."
