Spotlight on Armstrong East
Thank you again for the articles that have
shed some light on Armstt'()Ilg East.
One point 1 would like to clarify as a point 1
was making was that the "municipality" would
be sending a message of discrimination to resi-
dents who could not walk by making residents
vote on whether or not vehicles should continue
to be used. 'that was my point- not that neigh-
bours in particular were discriminating.
What are the seniors, disablt'(I, young moth-
ers with children, in our community as a whole
going to think of our council by suggesting a
vote on the matter? 'they will feel they are being
discriminated against and their right to choose
how they get to their cottage is being dictated to
them. Neighbors who walk are trying to for eve-
ryone I (1u the same.
l,iunbton Shores Council, depending on the
outcome of the proposed referendum, will he
sending the message that if you can't "walk"
then you might not be able to go to your
cottage.
1 state that the council has no authority to
mak(' this type of decision. The Municipal Act
clearly states the reasons why they cannot pass
this tylx' of rule.
The reality for many of the seniors, chal-
lenged people or young mothers etc is that
those folks may not have a person waiting at the
cottage to put then) in a wheelbarrow / or hone
made cart and pull then) along the beach for an
hour.
My wife is 42 and cannot show up at the cot-
tage while 1 ant at work and lug all the supplies
and the two kids in a wheelbarrow up to the cot-
tage. She simply cannot do it. She needs to use
the vehicle or she can't go. She is not even
severely challenged. So 1 have afforded an alter-
native. l don't want her condition to be pushed
to the 1111111 with an hour- long process making
trip after trip with a wheelbarrow.
Be neighbourly! Be respectful Of neighbour's
(decisions within our legal rights and mind your
own business. Ryon lived in a twenty story
apartment building, is it neighborly to suggest
people on the top floors take the stairs?
1 did not state that the residents arts distrin)i
tutting, but rather they are being 1111 Iwighlx)urly
by calling the l )1'P, ARCA and the finery Park
time and time again suggesting all residents
must walk. A small handful is being
un -neighborly.
They state that the Pinery Park and the
AB(:A both say "don't drive on the two areas
on Armstrong that connect to the municipal
roads:' This is not the case. in Ontario, it is
illegal to Illn(1-lock a property let alone a
whole subdivision.
As I am sore you are aware we have a letter
from the Park Superintendent - that's states in
writing that residents may use it vehicle to
drive on the road as it was intended. It also
states you can walk. We have never received
anything stating the contrary, nor are there
any endangered species on the roadway.
'h he reality I believe is that if the municipal-
ity could (1(1 something to solve the issue they
would have by now. •
I also think that if the municipality stated...
" We cannot control the use of the un-
assumed roads' and placed "use at own risk "
signs like in other communities this would
send the "message" to the community that
the residents need to he neighborly and get
along.
1.ambton shores have signs posted all over
that say, "Share the road': Why won't they step
up and state the same at Armstrong and end
this futile battle.
End of story. But council keeps stringing
along the issue. instead of making the 'hard
decision' and stating it to the residents. You
can't ('lost' a road... At xi take away a p1Y)perty
owners access rights and force them to "walk
only': After all, property law is the oldest and
strongest IoW on record is it not?'I his includes
access rights to get to your purchased land -
the lank that you pay taxes to enjoy.
We all love this environment as much as
the next neighbor and would certainly not act
in a way that would harm or diminish our
cherished cottage lands. '11u' vehicles are cer-
tainly much (iuieter than many other jet skis,
))()Wl'1'hO ItS, litWll mowers or ('111111 SAWS. 'lo
state otherwise would he absurd. Wouldn't it
be nice if everyone could get along with their
neighbor as gentlemen should?

The Great Storm
remembered
itruing' is nota strong enough word
when it comes to the anchoring of
the wreath in Saturday's SOS event
on lake f luron's waters. Save our Shipwrecks
group under the direction of Krissy Nichols was
an event that all journalists relish. It had historic
value, great interviews moments that can barely
he described without tearing up and just a great
story- in spite of the fart that 23 people had to
lose their lives for the ('vent to be recognized.
011 November 9th 1913 the Wexford ship
traveled from bort William (now 'Blunder Bay)
to (;oderich with it load of grain. It never made
it. A storm, one of the worst on record came
through killing all hands. Some 87 years later
as Don Chalmers was on a routine fishing trip -
he discovers the %vreckage. Ile knows the story
well and is shocked this ship made its way as
far south as the Bend.
011 Saturday 23 bells rang as the names of
those lost were read out, 23 carnations thrown
to the waters, many by family members. Diver
John Chartist dove the 75 feet to anchor a
wreath on the how of the ship to forever more
signify the remembrance of those who died.
The quiet on the lake was overwhelming.
Each person, historian, media, descendant took
a moment to reflect. On a Sunday in November,
100 years ago, young; people from the age of 15
faced that unbelievable change in weather. shod
